Price. That is why they still shop there. I hate to go in there but I will to save money on diapers. If it was out of my way, I wouldn't drive there. It happens to be 5 minutes from my house.

This is why I believe economics should be required before you can graduate high school! This is not an uncommon practice and unless you want to live in a socialistic society, every bit a part of capitalism.

Target does it too, as do a lot of other stores. It's not that uncommon.

I live within 18 miles of 3 different Kroger stores, where I do most of my grocery shopping. Each one of the stores charges different prices on a wide variety of things, as well as one store carries the Flat Earth chips I like so well, but the other 2 do not. I've also noticed on several occasions, that milk prices at each store can vary anywhere from .35 upwards to over $1!!! When I asked the dairy manager about it at the store that I go to most often (they usually have the higher price on milk), it basically came down to the fact that it's trucked farther, which costs Kroger more to get it to the store. I don't like Wal-Mart either, and choose not to shop there, unless it's absolute neccessity, which is very rare.

AtHomeWith2, I would have been upset too. I understand economics and the principals around it but don't have to like it either.
I would have returned the items as well. Good for you for noticing the prices and going the extra mile to save money for your family. Anyone who would not have done it, especially considering the proximity of the two stores must have more money to burn.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my "unnecessary rant" and am really honestly suprised how it seems some took it personally. I thought this was a forum about saving money and was only trying to get the message out about if you purchase large items shop around even between walmarts etc. but I guess it came out wrong. Maybe I'm crazy but I think just about anyone who participates in this forum would be upset as well if they found out that they spent $170 bucks they didn't have to and that was money taken away from other things their families could use. I don't post much and I didn't realize walmart was such a touchy issue--I do understand capitalism and economics as I am an accountant. I think it was just such a large number and a shock considering how much debt we are working to pay off and I was all proud of myself for having saved and paid cash for all these items for Christmas and sticking to my debt payoff plan while doing it only to find I could have spent less . Sorry if I offended anyone it just really upset me to think that I lost money when I thought I was saving money and I was really trying to share and save others money with my post which is what I thought this board was all about. I'm going back to reading the forums for awhile cause you all always have great ideas but I'll be more cautious with my posts.

Don't be offended! I think knowing a little back story might help you out here since you're relatively new around Mommysavers. Throughout our 8-year history, we've had countless walmart threads. Some have gotten very heated. There was one last year that I remember that probably had close to 100 responses and very strong emotions. Walmart is just a very touchy subject. Some members really question their ethics, other members love Walmart because it helps them save tons of money. That's the essence of the never-ending Walmart debate. So, I really think the reaction you've been getting has been fueled by past debates - please don't take it personally.

Thanks Kim, I didn't know I was opening an ugly can of worms. I was trying to share info and went about it the wrong way. Anyway, love or hate Walmart I can pretty much guarantee that nobody on the board would be happy knowing they overpaid $170 just because they didn't drive an extra mile. That is just a lot of money and when you saved and made sure you paid cash for everything you bought it just really rubs you the wrong way. I'll stay away from the walmart debate in the future---hopefully there aren't any hard feelings as everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Hey, me and my family are big Wal-Mart shoppers because of the prices but I still believe that they go out of their way to run other business away by undercutting their prices. Now they're doing it to dollar stores (same as Target with their $1 section) by offering cheap toys, party favors and paper plates/napkins/cups for parties for .88 cents each. So now I don't have to go to the dollar store when I'm buying party supplies. Just another way they show how greedy they are while they promote wanting to help their customers only have to make one stop for all their needs.

Like has been said, I could shop other places to keep them in business but why when I can get the same product at Wal-Mart for less? Helps my family budget a lot.
