He spoke for about 7 minutes, suggested some tax breaks, and said the U.S. should be just fine if Americans have more money to spend.

While I'm actually kind of hoping for his tax break, I sometimes wonder if it isn't just applying a bandaid to a leaking dam.

Let's see....he came into office, he gave a tax break to stimulate the economy. Now the economy is still awful so...what to do...what to do....oh! Here's an idea! Let's do the same thing we did 6 years ago!

This is nothing Definate Of course But here is some of the talk in an Article Pertaining to his Speech From Yahoo news

Quote:
Congressional aides said the White House plan is looking at rebates of up to $800 for individuals and $1,600 for married couples
Quote:
Democratic congressional leaders agree that tax relief should be in the package, but are working on a broader measure. Lawmakers are discussing a $500 rebate for individuals, said aides to lawmakers involved in the talks, with details for couples and people with children still being negotiated. The rebates would likely be limited to individuals with incomes of $85,000 or less and couples with incomes of $110,000 or less

Dear me- sounds like another band aid! Maybe they should join the FTJ project and try to fix some of the issues instead of giving people extra money to spend to fix the economy!

I definately have no problem getting more of a tax break- only it will be used to pay off some bills- not spending it on frivilous things!

Did he mention anything about a recession? I was busy doing house stuff (honestly though I try not to listen to his speeches!).

He's trying to avoid a recession (although some would argue we've been in one for some time). Sometimes I think he's doing exactly that....post-poning the problem for the next president to deal with (democrat or republican). The first "refund" he gave out was a pathetic panacea for a real problem after 9/11...this is still the same problem, only 7 years later. He only masked it with this "housing miracle" he boasted about 2 years ago. If people are worried about heating, gas and food, why would anyone spend the refund he gives us, rather than pay off what is owed and live cautiously. Does the government want/expect us all to run out and get flat screen tvs with this money? I know if I get anything, I'll save it...out of habit.

LOL. Doesn't it count as income for the next year, and then we get taxed on it. Correct me if I'm wrong. I thought we had to count the last tax break in the next year's taxes. Don't get me wrong, if we get what he says we will I'll put in savings or pay off a debt.

I am with you on the fact that if I do get a check I will definitely be either saving it or using it to pay down debt. However the sad fact is that it will likely work to "stimulate" the economy as they are hoping because a great deal of people will treat it as a bonus to buy more stuff! I know my SIL is already talking about what she'll buy with her tax money instead of thinking about building a savings account or paying off her bills.
