The what's in your stockpile thread got me thinking I don't consider things in my normal grocery shopping to be a stockpile. I always have enough food for a month or so, but I only would consider it a stockpile if it was extra that I bought with no immediate plans to use. What do you consider a stockpile?

a stockpile for me is anything above and beyond what i would need for the following week. not regular grocery shopping, but if i have things in my "stockpile" this week, i can use them in lieu of new groceries next week, and have money then to add more to the stockpile for future weeks. if that made sense. lol

I consider a month's worth of food a lot of food. I didn't think about how much we actually go through until I decided to have a stockpile. Most of what we eat flows though the house in a week. Things like milk, bread, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Buying meat on sale means it stays longer in the freezer, but we don't eat a lot of meat. My pantry is stocked with the fill ins. Spices, dried stuff, cereal, a dozen or so cans.

My stockpile then had to be the kind of things that would replace those perishables that we rely on heavily. Canned fruit and veges - ughh, dry milk. Bread would have to be replaced with other starches. To stay healthy, I wanted lots of good things. Several servings per person per day. It adds up.

I needed to buy more emergency supplies, too. Matches, water, candles and batteries, clothes line, soap and personal hygene.

I ended up with about 100 cans and a couple of boxes of other stuff. I date the food with a month that I want to pull it into my regular pantry and use. So each month I pull out and replace about 10 cans of stuff. It has been a challenge to find uses for things I wouldn't normally buy. We have managed.

i consider anything that i bought multiples of on a good sale and intend on using over a period of time ie my tons of hamburger and boneless skinless chicken it was to cheep to pass up so i consider that part of my stock pile or anything that would be there over a couple weeks i consider in my stockpile since i tend to shop weekly to buy my milk eggs ect.

I usually have a month or so worth of food, extra toiletries, a huge pile of TP etc. I'm going to start building it up to more than that - hopefully 3 months of food.
