341.00 for the United States family. WOW... January is the first month that I have kept track of how much money we spend on groceries each week. And the first couple of weeks were only about 25.00 (family of two adults and one 4 yr old)... I was also trying to use up my stockpile So only buying nescessties... Think about how much waste that American Family has also. How can you spend so much money on JUNK? They really are adding to our land FILL.

Everything seems to be packaged...
It's amazing how "basic" the food of some of the poorer countries is compared to our overly processed food.

Umm, 2 pizzas a week? Not to mention all of the other crap that family in North Carolina had. I mean maybe we will eat a pizza once every 2 months or so but still, that was a ton of food. DH can put it down and we still would be nowhere near that much food, nor that much cost either.

Did they say how they chose these families? Do you think the family in NC is pretty typical? The quantity of junk in some of those photos was astounding. So many bottles of soda! And $350 a week--that's $1400 a month!! Just for what seemed, at least from the house & clothes in the photo, to be a fairly average middle class family. (And I assume average middle class was the intent of the people putting together the comparison.)

The family in Egypt that fed, what, 8 people on about $50/week seemed to have the food I would want to be eating.

I followed one of the links from the comments, and got to some more pictures/prices:

What the World Eats, Part I - Photo Essays - TIME

The one I'd like to live with the most - the Ahmed family from Cairo. That might be because I'm on a "greens" kick, but their food looks like the most appetizing. The others have so much stuff we don't eat (or they just don't have much food )

Yes I used to work in a grocery store and that is very much how people live. The bad part is that is how they live before you add eatting out for the week. I know there were pizza's in the picture but I bet some weeks they eat out more than others.

Now I don't feel so bad spending about $165 a week for organic dairy, organic meat, and mostly organic fruits and veggies and some organic packaged stuff.

Not to be mean, but anyone notice the "fatness" of the family with all the sodas? I really think soda and juices aka high fructose corn syrup really plays a role in obesity.

Thankyou for sharing that. I am amazed at some of the photos.
The American family certainly didnt represent my family. We have alot more fruit, veggies and I dont buy junk food except for the occassional package of oreos or pretzels and I spend an average of $100/week to feed a family of 6.

That really is an amazing bunch of pictures! I have been trying to get more fruits and vegetables in our home for some time now. My children will eat them at times, but the trouble is that my DH LOVES the junk food. He breaks open a bag of Oreos or something similar all the time, and of course the children are intrigued. Aaaargh! How can I change our eating habits if my hubby is a junk-food junkie???? (and he is skinny to boot)

I work 10hrs a week in a supermarket and what makes me shake my head is that you get very obese people come in and buy all this junk food and they have kids and their kids are overwieght too. Now don't think I'm judging look at my photo.... We eat so healthy and yet I can't seem to lose wieght and I am really concious of this with my children. I know a lot of my wieght was because of the eating habits I developed as a child and the teasing that I got was really quite unbearable as a child so why do it to your children. My kids have junk food maybe once a month when their DH brings home MC Dee's. It makes you wonder.
