Jessical,
My best advice for starting a budget is to [b]keep it simple![b] I don't use any computer programs just pencil and paper.
1. List all income from all sources - total it.
2. List all expenses. Look at past checkbook entries (rent or mortgage, utility bills, food, gas etc.)
3. Do the math. Are you spending more than you make? Then you will need to find ways to either spend less or make more. If you lucky gal can see where you have more money than expenses use the extra to pay off debt.
We used the budget forms from Dave Ramsey's book "The Total Money Makeover" to start with and now I just use notebook paper. We do the envelope system for food, clothing and the like - so that's really simple, when the food envelope is empty we eat at home out of the pantry. I can not recommend his book enough - we have paid off over $20k in debt in the past 15 months - all on one self-employed income (plus a couple of part-time jobs).
See if your local library has a copy of the book. I hope this helped.
