After reading the post about what people spend on groceries around the world I was wondering what the price was were you live on certain items. How about we convert to US dollars to get a true gauge.

My location is Tasmania in Australia (AUD $0.86 to the US $1)
Milk 3ltrs (about 3/4 a gallon) Aud $3.79 US (3.79 / 0.86) = $4.40
Bread Aud $3.75 = $4.36 US
Eggs Aud $5.79 = $6.73
2 pounds of lean ground beef (mince - use formula 1kg of mince is 2.2pounds of mince) =$9.30 US (so $4.65 a pound).
Formula $20.00 = $23.25 US
Diapers (best deal is at Big W) $36.00 = $41.86 (96 in a pack and last me a month if I am lucky).

I use a menu plan, have a shopping list database to make my shopping list, I buy generic, and reduced items, I spend about 2 hrs shopping (by myself) as I check out all the specials to see which is the best bargain and every two weeks I spend $550.00 to feed a family of 5 and we have very little junk food or pop.
So what is it where you live? I would love to hear from those on the boards that feed their family of 5 for $90 US a week or less.....

When we lived in germany I noticed that fresh fruits and vegetables where a lot cheaper than over here.

I don't know the exact prices anymore but "basic" fruit like apples or pears would never be more than $ 2-3 for a 3 kg bag (about 7 lbs?)

Also 1kg flour ( 2.4 lbs I think) was 50 cents. Yogurt was also cheaper and tasted so much better than the stuff I get here. You were actually able to buy yogurt with some FAT in it and not that weird no fat crap...
Chips and soda were more expensive. We would only use the commissary for junk food or meat, the rest was cheaper off post.

I would say that I spend around $125 per week to feed our family of 4. I don't buy a whole lot of processed foods (one of my New Years' resolutions) but I do buy Annie's Mac and Cheese (organic vers of Kraft Mac and Cheese) plus some crackers and basic chips (tortilla chips or pretzels). We get our beef from my inlaws who raise cows as a hobby (they have 2 small cows slaughtered every Spring), so I don't buy beef. I do buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts but only when they are on sale for $1.99 per pound.

Overall, I'd say the AUS prices are higher than what I pay here.
1 gallon of fat free milk is US$3.89 (1 gal = 3.785 L)
a 5 lb bag of flour is around US$2.50 (5 lb = 2.268 kg)
an 18-pack of large eggs (the way I buy, sorry) is $2.99 (so around $1.99 for a doz) - BIG DIFFERENCE!
Apples were $1.89 per lb
the bread I buy is $3.69 (it's organic whole wheat w/ no added sugar, so it's on the expensive side, I think plain white bread would be a lot cheaper)

I live about an hour away from Boston, MA, in a pretty rural area. I only have 2 chains to choose from so the prices may not be the best - I don't know.

HTH,
Karen

HTH,
Karen
Wow that is a huge difference, our organic bread is about $6.50!! I know the prices pretty well as a). I work in a supermarket and b). I have a spreadsheet with everything I buy and the prices so I can see how much I am going to spend before I go to the shops (has cut my spending down by about $200.00). So I am always checking the prices to make sure they are the same on my sheet. By doing it this way you can also see the subtle price changes as they take affect.

Yes the prices do seam to be different. depending on not only where you live but where you shop and what's in season and what is local vs what has to be brought in.

I spend around $50 a week to feed my family of 3. That may be going up a little in our goal to eat healthier. This week it went up to $60 and thats because half my cart was produce.

I live in Washington things like apples are very cheep because we grow a lot of apples not more the 3 hours from my home.
Things like bread I won't pay over $2 a loaf and normally it will cost me $1.75 to $1.50 depending if its on sale.

I buy a lot of generics and do bulk buying once a month($200) so my weekly shopping is for the most part just fresh pruduce and dairy.

I live in Kansas and here are a few of our prices:

milk $3.89 per gallon
bread $1.08 per loaf
bananas $.59 per pound
bag of chips $2.50 that is about average for say Doritos

We spend about $125 a week for a family of six. And we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at home every day. So not too bad.

Here is the one that is killing us:
gas $2.89 per gallon and it is supposed to be up to $4 a gallon by summer. UGH!!!

Michigan hear and gas is killing us too. It hangs around $3/gallon (but often jumps with no notice to $3.20).

I can usually get some type of milk on sale for $3/gallon
Bread is normally 2 for $3
Apples are cheap - we grow them around here.
A large bag of oranges is cheap this time of year too ($3)

Meat and produce tend to be the most expensive items.
I try to spend $100/week to feed a family of 4 but normally that bill is more like $130.

I just did a conversion and I think a gallon is 3.2 ltrs. If that is the case then can we have your GAS!!! We are paying a $1.45 ltr. That is $4.64 Aud a gallon so that makes it $5.39 converted. Arhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

There are 3.79 liters in a gallon. So, if you are paying 1.45AUD /L, that is $5.50/Gallon Aud, which according to your exchange rate is $4.87 USD/Gallon. That's still a lot of meny!
