i consider any food convenience that is boxed and brought but is relatively easy and cheap to make from scratch.

frozen waffles and cakes i don't consider convenience foods but neccessities because cakes are difficult for me to make from scratch and are time consuming. waffles are time consuming too to make from scratch.

i think convenience foods are things like frozen pizzas, pastas, salads, stir frys...those things are cheaper and easy to make from scratch AND healthier for you!!

Waffles are time consuming? That is a quick supper for us It does take longer than popping them in the toaster but takes about 15 minutes total. I'll share a recipe if anyone wants it.

My worry is all the extra stuff you eat when you use a box mix, "just add water" food or "just add meat" dinner. When you start making your usual items from scratch and start memorizing recipes, it makes it much easier. It doesn't seem so difficult or time consuming because you don't have to think so much about all the steps in the recipe. It does get easier and faster with practice.

I'm not picking on anyone, I'm just hoping the next generation will embrace the mixer My girls have aprons and stools for the kitchen. They LOVE helping and it is my goal to teach them how to cook and bake healthy meals. They also help Daddy make pancakes (that is his specialty).

I also think from scratch can be easy. Muffins, cornbread, pancakes, drop biscuits. I can do those easily. I have not embraced the mixer though. I have a hand mixer and a blender that I use as rarely as possible. That pushes things beyond easy for me. The cleanup isn't worth it. I am happy to just stir things up. I like my whisk.

I just received a stand mixer for Christmas and I'm excited because I think I'll make more things from scratch with it. It's so nice to not have to stand over the bowl.

I try not to buy too many convenience items. I do buy shredded cheese because I've found that I can buy a pound of shredded cheaper than by the block. Also, some items would just be so much more expensive to make from scratch than from a box that I have to take that into consideration since we have a tight budget.
