I've been there and I vividly remember that achy feeling when you know you have to drop a huge chunk of change. We were driving across Iowa on our way back home with a 6 year old van we had just bought used 3 months before when the transmission "blew up". Not only did we have to pay $2600 for a new transmission at a dealer since we didn't have the option of driving around to find some place else that would do it for cheaper, we had to pay $70 for a night in a hotel since we were hours away from any friends or family. That was my 31st birthday, my son was 9 months old, and my husband only had part-time employment...I cried.

I hope your van makes a speedy and inexpensive recovery!

Although we didn't break down, I feel your pain of a large repair. The car we bought a few weeks ago needed a timing belt & water pump because it was over 150,000 miles. My husband says it also needs the intake cleaned out but that shouldn't be very much. It was preventative maintenace. If the belt goes unexpectedly it could be an even bigger repair. Just when I thought I had the budget all figured out!

I am so glad your DH was there, we are having the same weather here and it is no fun at all!! I hope you get good news on your van

We certainly are in the same boat aren't we! I'm starting to think Horse and Buggy, not such a bad idea.
