A couple of years ago when my car was in an accident we were for a week. It was terrible. We live a little over a mile from the kids school, so we could walk but there aren't sidewalks the whole way so it was very dangerous for my kids who were in 2nd grade, 4 and 2. We decided at that point we would never be without two cars again. My DH's car is a '97 and my van is '02 we don't have any payments so that makes a huge difference.

We had one car for a couple of years. It took a lot of juggling, but we made it work. I always worried about what we'd do if our one and only car broke down.

Now we have two cars, but it's nice to know we could get by with one if it would come to that.

It is nice to jump in the car and go, without having to re-adjust the seat, mirrors, steering wheel and radio back to my preferences.

We're a one car familly and we love it. It represents huge savings for us and this makes it possible for me be a SAHM. The days I want to keep the car DH takes the bus to work. In the summer he likes to bike to work a couple times a week, so I have the car on those days. Works out fine for us. Some days I have the car and I don't even use it.

We are but I also dont't drive (eye issues) so were used to it. We purposly moved to a walking community. In the winter it can be frustrating but if need be I could catch a bus! In the summer we walk.

The family I sit for only have one car but they live in the same community and usually one of them is takes the bus if they dont drive in together.

We were for 6-7 years. and I know several families that are. We have lots of "organic Joneses" around here , so it's quite well-viewed to walk or bike to work, even if the city doesn't make it as possible as it should. We did finally get a second vehicle a few months ago because we had been wanting something big enough to actually transport something (our other car was very very small), and we kept the little first car when we got the second. We thought it was more valuable to us in terms of convenience than the money we would earn selling it.

it would not work for us since we live in a small rural community... i do however limit my driving to getting ds to and from school and once a week the 60 mile round trip to get groceries.. this also leaves me transportation if my kids are sick for dr appt. dh leaves for work at 3:30am so thats to early to be driving him somewhere.. we also have cars that are paid for so that makes it more feasable to have 2 cars.. we will never have a car payment again this way we are able to afford 2 cars and insurance.

We aren't, and it would be hard for us to even try. We have a farm, so a big truck is a necessity (pulling livestock trailers, transporting hay, etc).

I drive a 93 Honda Accord (very economical) and DH has TWO trucks. A 96 Dodge Ram and an 88 GMC (plow truck and misc farm needs). DH also has a work truck which is a HUGE blessing for us with gas prices like they are (he can only drive it to and from work). We usually just insure my car and one of the trucks (the plow truck in winter, Dodge in Spring-Summer-Fall). We are going to try and skip insuring the Dodge for part of the year this year, since my car is adequate until livestock and hay needs hauling this fall.

I drive DD to school and pick her up everyday (7 miles roundtrip) and we are too rural to walk/bike for that. I also drive 30 miles (one way) to see my parents twice per week. Once on Wednesdays and once on the weekend. Their health makes it hard for them to come our way, so we make the drive. I actually drive there TWICE on Wednesdays, as they watch younger DD for me while I volunteer at DDs school and then we go back and pick her up after school.

I would also worry about Dr appts and such, since DH works about an hour away and leaves at 5AM each morning. His hours aren't always exact so it would be very hard to plan on DD's school pick-ups and such. Public transit really isn't an option for us, so we'll probably always have 2 vehicles...not counting DH's work truck.

We have two cars, but I do think it's possible if the circumstances are right. ie- live in an area where you can walk etc. You can also save money when you do have two cars. My husbands car gets horrible gas milage, so on days when i dont need to go anywhere he takes my car. The savings really add up. It doesnt take much planning either, the night before he just asks me if i need to go anywhere.
