Anyone save money by only having one car? Growing up we only had one and my dad just took the bus to work. It wouldn't work for us though since we both work, and I commute on weekends to my job.

There is a mom that walks 5 blocks to and from school to drop off her kiindergartener. She told me that she is able to be a stay at home mom due in part to the fact they only have one car.(They save on an extra car payment, gas, and routine maintenance). She just walks everywhere she needs to go, or waits to run errands in the evening when her dh.

No...but we could be. Dh's car spends most of it's life in the parking lot at the airport!

When we lived in Europe, Dh rode his bike to work, if you can believe that! I had the car during the day. Worked out just fine. Also great public transportation, so if Dh needed the car, I could still get to where I needed to go...or I just walked.

We've thought about it but only briefly. I could if I had to take dh to work to keep a vehicle, but on Sundays dh has to be to church by around 6:30 and there is nothing available for the kids at that time and they usually aren't up till around the time that he leaves.... We have no public transportation where we live and I live about 2 miles out of town.

My sister and her dh did it for awhile. Where they live it is a BIG golf cart community. They have special "roads and bridges" just for golf carts. They got a golf cart cheap and went down to one vehicle for awhile to save up for vehicle. This was before having kids tho.

ETA: the reason we aren't at church this morning is bc the kids are sick.

We're rural and have no public transportation but last fall when the car broke down, we ended up just parking it for a bit. It was doable. Though it involved a lot of planning and me staying at home. It also involved a bit of help from my mother which I don't think was always fair to her. I usually bought her lunch or gas and attempted to accomadate her schedule the best I could but for our area, at least during the winter months, we needed 2 cars. But to visit the doctor sometimes when the kids were sick, involved us traveling 40 miles away and on those days I had to use her.

Yes, we are. I'm a SAHM and drive our family vehicle for errands and what-not and my husband was given a work vehicle (they pay for gas!). That is a tremendous savings and blessing to our budget. The only glitch is, he's not permitted to use it for family use. If he's involved in an accident during off times, he'd be liable. It does create a problem on weekends sometimes though, if he needs to be somewhere and so do I. We generally work it out though.

We are due for a new family car within a few years and we are saving to pay cash for it...probably somewhere in the area of 6-$8,000.

We had 4 cars last month! The insurance company asked us if we were going to sell something Keep in mind, the value of all these vehicles was probably $25,000 for 4. We're back to 3 vehicles now. My husband drives a Jetta diesal for commuting and a 88 Chevy truck. I have a '99 Suburban. There is no way we could get by with 1 vehicle. I drive my daughter to preschool and will always be driving them to school.

We couldn't do it, DH travels so much for his job. I love the idea though! What a savings every month

We aren't, but we could be. I would have to take my DH to and from work. The vehicles we drive though, aren't expensive, they are older (95 and 00). We only have liability on both. So our car related expenses are very little. I only drive about 30 miles a week, if that. But next fall when my DD starts preschool I am sure that will double.

There is no way we could!! My dh works an hour away and leaves at 5am. I have to take the kids to daycare and school and then go to work (10 miles for me). Even when I stayed home it did not work since I had to get the kids to school and I was afraid that if the school called or something happened I would have no transportation. I also absolutely hate to be home with no car even if I don't have anywhere to go, I don't like knowing that I can't.
