No, I don't mind going around with just 2 pairs of shoes.

Only barely used ones. Like dress shoes or other specialty shoes for my kids that I know didn't get a lot of wear, and that they also won't wear much. For example, my daughter REALLY wanted a pair of cowboy boots last year, but I just couldn't see spending $15 or more for a pair of shoes she really wouldn't wear that much (she's 3, so still outgrowing fast). At my moms of multiples fall garage sale, there was a pair of Osh Kosh cowboy boots for $3, so I bought them for her. I have bought dress shoes at garage sales for both kids, but now that I think about it, they were all new with tags! But I would buy them used if they were in really good condition, because kids this age just don't get that much wear out of those type of shoes. But their tennis shoes and sandals that they wear every day, I buy new. Those, and socks and underwear are the things that I just don't buy used.

Sweaty toe marks left by some stranger really creep me out. So, they'd have to be pretty awesome shoes!!

But for babies who don't really walk in them, I would probably just wash them out really well.

Yep, I buy used kiddos shoes on ebay or at yard sales if they are in good shape. More often though their shoes come from WalMart.
I almost always buy my shoes second hand because I prefer an expensive brand of cowboy boots so I buy them on ebay used.

You bet though the ones that I do get "used" still have store tags or look like they have been never worn

Yep! Mostly for DS b/c he's been so little and shoes that you find at his size haven't hardly been worn! I found a pair of Buster Brown Dress Shoes for him at the Thrift store that had never been worn for $3!!!

For my son right now I have. Dress shoes mostly. Little kids "sweaty feet" don't really gross me out (under two.) But I mostly buy new.

Absolutely and you CAN wash most shoes. I have washed several second hand pairs with great success. I would only buy good condition, barely worn pairs though.
I also wash all of my own tennis shoes about 3x a year to keep them looking good. I've never had any issue with them falling apart.
