Nightline tonight is supposed to have a segment on people saving money on their grocery budget by buying food that is past or near the buy date on the packaging. Does anyone do this to save money? Has anyone figured out how long food is good for after it's date on the package?

I buy meat all the time and freeze it. It has never gone bad on me.

I've seen meat that is close to it's exp. date on the package that is starting to turn green. Is that a sign it's bad, does it just cook normally, or do you cut it off?

I have never seen that and I think that's disgusting. Even if it was still good I don't think I could eat it.

I've never bought it cause it grosses me out too. I just recently starting testing my eggs with the float test, and have stopped throwing them away when they go past the date on the package.

I would not buy it if it looked gross but if I see a coupon off and I know it looks okay I will buy and throw in the freezer, were still living! I also sometimes buy day old bread at the Entemans or Pepridge farm outlet. Goldfish cracker are soooo cheap and taste just fine!

I do, but never past date, and it has to look fine. I check Sam's Club for markdowns, whatever is marked down is what we eat that week. Our No Frills supermarket also marks down milk $.50 to $1 off if they are within a few days of the date. With 4 family members, there's no problem getting the milk used before it goes bad.

The manager at PF outlet once told me that most of their products (not bread, rolls) are good for 6 months beyond the sell by date. Especially goldfish...

I was in kroger last week and they had cheese that was expiring that day on sale for 1 a pack, so I loaded up and now it is in the freezer. I also buy meat, if it looks ok. I don't buy bread because I don't like bread after it is frozen, but that is just me!
