I used to sew a lot of our clothes to save money, but the price of fabric, patterns and especially notions has gone up so much, I really don't come out ahead. I did make extra money sewing for others. I made several maternity wedding dresses - there seems to be a big demand for that.

Now I mostly sew simple things. I've made all our curtains - that is a savings. Sometimes I make gifts - placemats, potholders, napkins, tote bags...

I love to sew, crochet and i would love to learn how to knit.. just haven't tried yet.

I do it more as a hobby than anything. but in my new house i will have to make draps as the ones that are look like they are from when the house was built in 1909!!

So, I made her a black dress! The fabric had an allover daisy print that was embroidered.... and I added a yellow ribbon around her waist. She looked very cute to say the least!
I would LOVE to see pictures of this! It sounds gorgeous!

Sarah, that dress is so beautiful!!! I don't think you could buy something that nice for $20.

I sew a little bit, but unless I already have the pattern and buy fabric with a 40% coupon, it isn't cheaper.

My mom used to whip out all our clothes - T-shirts, PJs, fancy easter dresses. Back in the day (before walmart) it was much cheaper to sew your own clothes. She even made my wedding dress for about $100.

I absolutely love to sew. I make my own scrub tops to wear to work. I have great tops that no one else has. I wait until I find the fabric really cheap and can make a top for less than $5 sometimes for as little as $2.

I try to buy my patterns when they are on sale at Hancock's. Walmart always has theirs 50% off.

I wish my 10yo Diva would wear more clothes I make for her. She is so particular about fit that it's almost impossible. Although, this morning she did wear a pair of capri pants that I made her. We will have to see when she gets home this afternoon if she ever plans to wear them again

I'd have to say that it really depends on what you're sewing. For RenFest costumes and other specialty attire it's much cheaper to sew it yourself. If we're talking regular clothes than no, I only buy baby clothing with a limit of $1 (used) or $3 (new). I have been able to fill my daughter's wardrobe this way by buying bigger sizes year round. However I have found some things are cheaper to sew too: cloth diapers (those things are expensive!!!), crib sheets, and other general items. I don't sew often but when I do it's almost never clothes.

I would love to have a sewing machine, but I think I would mostly put together quilts on it. I would be afraid to try clothing!
