So, I was looking through the other topic and was amazed at how many people make their own products (and at some of the items made). It would be great to get a list going for some of those money saving recipes. I'm simply talking about basic staples here- Things you don't come across on recipe sites constantly (example: not chocolate chip cookies). If you have any links or ideas I would LOVE to try them out!

Sweetened Condensed Milk
1/3 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup melted butter
1 cup powdered milk

Combine ingredients. Process in blender or food processer until smooth. Makes the equivalent of l can.

Diabetic Sweetened Condensed Milk

1 1/2 c. cold water
1 1/3 c. nonfat dry milk
1/3 c. Sugar Twin or Splenda

Combine water and dry milk in 2-cup microwave-safe container. Cover and microwave on high 45 - 60 seconds (until mixture is hot, but not boiling). Stir in sweetener. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before using. Makes the equivalent of one 12-oz. can.

Evaporated Milk

Mix powdered milk with 1/2 the water required to reconstitute it.

Chocolate Sauce

2 T. cornstarch
3 T. cocoa powder
1 c. sugar
1/4 t. salt
1/2 t. butter
1 c. cold water
1 T. vanilla

Mix dry ingredients together. Add water and butter. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until thick. Stir in vanilla.

Chocolate Pudding Pop Mix

4 2/3 c. dry milk powder
1 c. sugar
3/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
2/3 c. cornstarch
1/2 t. salt

Combine ingredients and mix thoroughly. Store in an airtight container.

To make pudding pops:

1 1/4 c. dry mixture
1 3/4 c. water
2 t. margerine
1 t. vanilla

Combine dry mix with water in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until mixture starts to boil. Boil 15 seconds. Remove from heat and stir in margerine and vanilla. Allow to cool, and pour into popsicle molds, and freeze. (I leave out the margerine).

Light Homemade Bisquick Substitute

8 c. flour (I use half whole wheat/half white)
1/4 c. baking powder
3 T. sugar
1 T. salt
1 1/3 dry milk
2/3 c. canola oil

Mix dry ingredients together, then cut in oil until mixture resembles cornmeal. Store in an airtight container. Can be used in any recipe requiring Bisquick.

Salsa

1# chopped onions
6 cloves garlic, crushed
1# sweet peppers, chopped
1# hot peppers, chopped
5# tomatoes, peeled & chopped
2 t. salt
3/4 c. vinigar
1/4 c. cilantro leaves (finely chopped)

Place onions, peppers, tomatoes, salt & vinigar in a large pot. Heat to simmering, and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in cilantro. I freeze this, but it could be canned: Pack into pint jars, leave 1/2 inch head space, process 15 minutes in hot water bath. Makes 15 pints.

Thanks for the link and the recipes. I have a huge thing of dry milk sitting in my closet, never being used. I'll have to start substituting. ^___^
