When it comes down to saving time vs. saving money, where do you stand?

For example: Is it more important to you to save money by making your own laundry detergent or more important to save time by buying laundry detergent? Making your own wipes (save money) or buying them (save time)?

Where and when do you value your time over saving money?

I think for me it all depends on if I enjoy doing something or if the time is productive. Making laundry detergent vs. driving 40mph in a 60 zone--the laundry detergent is something productive, whereas I don't feel the driving slow is productive for me.

I used to be more of a time person, but lately I've become more of a money saver. I buy blocks of parmesan and grate it myself. Or I mince my own garlic. I think because I enjoy saving money, and I have the time to use, I enjoy the process of doing things to save money.

It really depends on what you're talking about. For instance, I can a lot of our fruits and veggies which has been suggested by more than one person that I am perfectly nuts for doing. But for me it is so important to know what is going in my food. Not to mention that I am re-using my jars from year to year and I feel good about the lack of waste. And the same can be said about my garden -- though it is a bit more acceptable and enjoyable than canning for most people. It doesn't involve a hot stove during the summer months.

But other things, say changing the oil in our car. We would burn up our engines before we ever got around to changing it. So it that sense it is best we pay to have someone do it. Or cleaning our house -- if we had more $ or I worked outside the home, I would totally pay to have a housekeeper come in once or twice a week.

At certain points of my life, I've certainly had more time than money. Those were the times that I'd go to almost any length to save. As I get older, the trend is swinging the other way where I feel like I have more money than time sometimes. It comes down to choices, too. Some things I ENJOY taking extra time for, other things I don't. I love poking around clothing stores to get good deals. Dh and I DON'T enjoy home improvement projects as much, so we're willing to pay extra to have the help.

For me, it depends almost entirely on how much time I have to spare. During the times of the year when we are all really busy, time is more valuable. But during slower periods (like the summer when I'm down to working half-time), it's all about saving the money.

Like others, there are some things that time/convenience always wins out because it's something I strongly dislike doing. For example, I've been cutting all kinds of things in the grocery/household budget, but I can't bring myself to give up those Cascade gel packs. Silly? Probably, but since I dislike dishes so much, the ease and lack of mess is worth it to me.

Depends on the situation, how much time, how much money. The laundry detergent I would never bother with. Too much time to make for too little money savings.

Mowing lawn/raking lawn/shoveling snow - we do it.
Cleaning house - we do it.
Painting interior - we will pay, unless it is a small room with no extra high anything.
Roofing/siding/plumbing/electrical - we will pay.
Landscaping along the lines of major tree trimming, patio pavers or walkways - we will pay. Far too labor intensive.

Also if I have given myself plenty of time in the morning to drive to work I will drive slower 65-68 (plus I'm never in a hurry to get to work)

It is a mixture. I do somethings for myself, but know my limits. I would never make my own detergent. Not worth my time at all, since I can buy detergent cheaply. I am a busy person, though, so I appreciate some conviences.

I'm with everyone else, it depends on what it is. I'll tell you what I won't do though, and that's run to all different stores to do my shopping. For example, I know some people who do their food shopping at the grocery store, non-perishables at Target, bulk at Sams' Club, then if they have coupons for a certain store they'll run to that specific store to cash in. To me, it's all too much time and money to do this.
