My DH and I were really looking forward to a family trip to see my family in MI this year and for them to meet my DS. I haven't been home in 2 years to see them. (live in FL) We are so close to paying off our credit card and then this week we had 2 major repairs to keep my car running that made us have to spend some extra money we don't have. We just can't see spending two thousand on a trip and putting ourselves deeper in the hole. I really want to see my 90 year old grandma and my sister so much. I am trying to smile but I think getting over the disappointment is going to take a while.

I am so sorry. I can imagine the disapointment. Is there anyway to do the trip cheaper? Like stay with relatives instead of a hotel? Just go with your son(if he is your only and you can find a good deal on plane or train tickets) so your husband doesn't have to miss work? I don't know if any of that is possible, I am just trying to brain storm for you.

We have thought about how we could go cheaper and I even mentioned going by myself. DH isn't to excited about me traveling alone with a 9 month old. Still with plane tickets and some food it would be over 500.00 to fly and not drive for just one of us.

i'm sorry that sucks we also wanted to take a good vacation this year but have put that on hold to keep paying down debt.. maybe start saving small amount so you for sure could go next summer. can any of them come visit you???? at least if someone was able to make it to you maybe you would feel alittle closer to home.

I know about these things. My family and elderly father are in TX and we are in NH. Every year, we have to make this decision.

If it were me, I would spend the $500 and take my baby to see the family. The considerations for me would be how long since I had seen them, how long it would take to make up the $500, whether a real vacation could happen in the near future, and what the family bonding is worth to me.

You have opportunities with your husband to bond and take time off in small ways all year long. Your distant family is worth some financial hardship, I imagine, but how much is the question.

It would be nice to set up a weekend with those family members at a halfway points - like a reunion. Your grandma might not be able to travel well at her age though. I'm sorry.

I know exactly how you feel! we had been planning on going to see my father in law next Christmas (he lives in Africa) but have decided to postpone for at least one more year since we are really trying to pay down our debt.... grandpa has not seen my little guy since he was born almost 16 months ago!
