I have been wanting to try to make my own laundry detergent but i was wondering from the more experienced people whether the liquid or powder detergent works better. The powder seems like it would be easier to store but i want it to work well . Also is this better for the environment?? I would think it would be and what about young children i always buy the allergen free stuff for the toddler. thanks

I tried making the powder and it didn't really dissolve but I suppose I've had that problem with all powder detergents. They always leave tiny white spots on my clothes. I don't have any homemade liquid recipes though. I'm waiting to run out before I look for some.

I made my own powdered for about six months using Borax, fels naptha soap and washing soda. I was pretty happy with it, until my new washer messed up. The tech said that a "waxy" substance was clogging one of the tubes that led to the sensor (telling it to stop filling - hence my overflows!!) I thought this might be due to the Fels Naptha soap b/c it does have a bit of a waxy feel to it. Since I started using regular detergent (no phospates, fragrances or dyes, though) I haven't had any other issues with my washer. So, just interjecting my experience - let me know if you find a great one! I'd be wiling to try another recipe...
