I wouldn't "ask" anyone for a specific gift.

No, I agree that is rude. But in my family we ask each other what we would like for birthday/Christmas presents. So if I want a gift certificate to a certain place I give them those suggestions.

I never thought of asking for GC. I honestly don't think I could tell other people what to get me unless they asked what I wanted. The only other people I get gifts from besides my DH and kids is my mom, sister and SIL and then they normally give money.

Gotcha. I still don't really tell anyone what I want as a gift, but DH can give out as much information/as many hints as he likes

I LOVE Gift Cards. My mom always gets me Kohls or Ulta b/c she knows that's what I need/want. I do the same for her. I don't have to "ask" and I wouldn't ask for one. But if someone specifically asks me what I would like I would mention a few stores I frequently shop at. My dad and grandparents just send me checks and those are really the only people that buy for me.

i love gift cards!! But the way I look at it is if say my sister or mom ask me what I want for bday I ask for a gift card so that we can go shopping and have a day together.

DH always asks for gift cards for his bday that we can put towards something specific that we are saving up to get for the house. Everyone kind of knows that we are doing this so actually I don't think that we actually even "ask" for the gift cards. For instance last year we mentioned that we were going to be getting window treatments for our house (we had NOTHING!!! not even any blinds!) so over the year we got cards from different people for JCP and Bed Bath and Beyond etc. that we could buy that type of stuff at.

I don't like when people ask me what I want for a gift. It makes me uncomfortable.

Our whole family (mine and my husband's side) always ask each other what to get for birthdays, etc. My family lives close but my husband's family lives in 4 different states so it's hard to keep up with what everyone needs. I usually send gift cards b/c I know the kids can pick out what they want and the adults won't buy anything for themselves unless you force them. I send Starbuck's cards to his brothers and usually clothing store cards to the wives. His older brother always sends us a check for our birthdays...which we appreciate...but boy, is it a booger for us to get to the bank to cash them. His younger brother doesn't make as much (they're both pastors) so if his wife asks what we want I usually just tell her something small. I would never ask her for a gift card b/c I know she enjoys hunting down deals and sending lots of little things. She also shops for gifts all year long, so chances are she has half a gift 6 months before she needs it.

So to answer you question ...It depends on who I'm talking to. My side of the family...I ask for gift cards if they ask what to get us b/c we just don't need much anymore. The stuff we do need is usually expensive so during Christmas everyone in my family will give my husband Home Depot gift cards so he can buy the big thing he wants. Last year it was a Wii, so the whole family gave him walmart gift cards for games and accessories. My husband's side of the family...they rarely ask.
