Our whole family (mine and my husband's side) always ask each other what to get for birthdays, etc. My family lives close but my husband's family lives in 4 different states so it's hard to keep up with what everyone needs. I usually send gift cards b/c I know the kids can pick out what they want and the adults won't buy anything for themselves unless you force them. I send Starbuck's cards to his brothers and usually clothing store cards to the wives. His older brother always sends us a check for our birthdays...which we appreciate...but boy, is it a booger for us to get to the bank to cash them. His younger brother doesn't make as much (they're both pastors) so if his wife asks what we want I usually just tell her something small. I would never ask her for a gift card b/c I know she enjoys hunting down deals and sending lots of little things. She also shops for gifts all year long, so chances are she has half a gift 6 months before she needs it.
So to answer you question ...It depends on who I'm talking to. My side of the family...I ask for gift cards if they ask what to get us b/c we just don't need much anymore. The stuff we do need is usually expensive so during Christmas everyone in my family will give my husband Home Depot gift cards so he can buy the big thing he wants. Last year it was a Wii, so the whole family gave him walmart gift cards for games and accessories. My husband's side of the family...they rarely ask.
