Motorcycles and scooters get much better gas mileage than cars. Has anyone bought one to save money on gas?

Dh got a scooter that he will take to work on days he doesn't want to ride his bike. Plus he takes it for quick trips to the store. It gets 120 miles to the gallon. Yesterday he filled up and it cost $3 and some change. It will save us lots of money because his other vehicle is a extended cab truck.

we are thinking of getting dh a motorcycle. my dad just bought one he drives a ford explorer and has to drive out towards the airport to work so its gonna really save him some gas money.. my sisters husband got one last year he vends for the twins and vikings for a 2nd job so its saving them money during baseball season since he has to go all the way down town.

My DH was just talking about this the other night. He is seriously thinking about getting a scooter for work. He think that he is going to be checking around on them this weekend as he has off from work.

I've toyed with this idea for a while. Fortunately dh's car gets around 30 mpg so filling up his car isn't that painful for us yet. However, if gas actually does get near the $5 range, we'll have to seriously consider getting a motorcycle for dh.

Yes, we used to have scooters, but sold those and now dh drives the motorcycle whenever he can.

Dh wants one too ~ he has been bugging me for some time now... I just wonder about the initial cost to buy one ~ has anyone really looked into it & really checked out the price & how long it will take to start actually saving money?

We drive such long mileage that it wouldn't be practical. Not to mention the frequent weather changes here in St. Louis. One min it is sunny and 70 and by afternoon is can be snowing and raining. My honda gets pretty good mileage but the DH's truck does not.

Well, I would, but you can't drag 5 kids around on a scooter Dh can't drive a motorcycle since he is hearing impaired. It is a condition on his license. Plus he drives 60 miles each way to work so it would not be to comfortable. Not to mention MN's weather!!!

If you are going to be driving on a highway or interstate, I'd recommend getting a bigger street bike. Dh got his low miles '94 Honda Magna for about $3k a few years ago. Buy used, and settle for less than a Harley, and you can get a nice bike for a good price. His older dirt bike was ~$800, and his older Yamaha scooters were ~$400 used.
