Since I mill my own flour, I recently bought 500 pounds of wheat berries ( they stay fresh just about forever, if stored properly and unground). The cost of wheat has tripled in the last 10 months, so I only wish I had done it sooner. We do have chickens, so we stay in fresh eggs....I also bought 5 gallons of honey..( I bake with it quite a bit ).The 500 pounds of wheat may seem like a LOT, but it is really only 10 of the big dog food bags....

We eat more fresh food but I will plan on stocking up on cereal, rice, some canned tomatoes, pasta (for the kiddies) as well as meats.

So I am curious: I know you make all your own flour and bread. How long, approximately, would it take you to go through 500 lbs of wheat berries? About how many pounds do you use a month?

I stockpiled a little today. I really didn't need rice, flour & sugar but they were on sale. So I have 3-2lb bags of rice, 3-5lb bags of flour, 3-5lb bags of sugar. I will probably buy extra cereal, pasta and canned veggies.

I stock also...Im a big coupon user so I buy things on sale w/coupons and stock alot that way.

Here's an example....our store just had log cabin syrup in the big bottles on sale for 4/10.00 and I had 1.00 off 1 coupons...I couldn't even find a generic brand in that size for less than 1.89...so I bought 12 bottles(thats how many coupons I had)sounds like alot maybe but we do pancakes, waffles etc alot...and I figure Im good for a year.(and exp dates are good til the end of 09)

I dont really stock for a certain amount of time...I just get what I can get at the best prices,I only buy things we use,and I have a good rotate system(which is key to stocking I think)and it's also a good idea to date the tops of your cans...only takes a sec w/a marker to date it and really helps to keep you organized.

I am trying NOT to stockpile because I waste WAY too much food that way going out of date.

What I am trying to do is build some extra staples when on sale and then buy exactly what we need. I have found being more aware I actually spend LESS at the grocery store even with the rise in prices.

i have been expanding my pantry storage, but not really because of rising food prices. I am planning to buy some extra flour and rice though because of that.

WE are BAD at letting things go bad. I have been freezing more food items that I know we will eat. I have to get better at planning before I start. I always have plenty of rice and pasta.

but I am not sure that my hubby will agree that it is a good idea.

I know that I really stock up on diapers and wipes when I get a great deal on them and that leaves more money left over for food.
We also have about 20 pounds of burger in the freezer, a turkey in the freezer and a few extra cans of fruit and veggies in the pantry but not a lot. Not enough to make me feel like we have a good stockpile.

I should really stock back up on tp and baby food since our son will be born later this summer.
