If YOU were able to offer someone who didn't have a clue about frugality tips on surviving a recession, what would you say? What are the top 2-3 things they should do? Here are some examples:

*Schedule errands for one day only to conserve gas and limit impulse purchases
*Get back to the basics: cooking from scratch, hanging out with friends and family for entertainment, etc.
*Pay down debt, build up the emergency fund

What else? If you'd like to share YOUR tips on the CBS Early Show, visit this link:

Get rid of all the debts and build emergency/retirement account
Have a garden and grow vegetables
Stock up the pantry (only buy things on sale)
Bike or walk to work to save gas
Move to a smaller house (no sense each kid have a room of their own especially if they are same gender)
Let say you have 2 kids older than 3 yrs old. Get a car save gas
Collect rain water in a big barrel to water plants, wash dogs, car etc..
Hang your clothes outside during the summer
Always run your washing machine and dishwasher when its full
Do your own yardwork
Educate yourself about home improvement, finances, etc..
Never compete with your neighbors

Review all of your accounts. Could you get a better rate on your savings if you move it somewhere else? Does your checking acct. charge fees? If so, there are fee-free accounts out there. What about insurance? Raising deductibles will save a lot (be sure you have enough in your emergency fund to pay the deductible, though). Also, if you have an older car with low value, you might consider dropping collision coverage on it (that pays to fix your car if an accident is your fault). Other ways to save on insurance are to combine your home and auto insurance, and drive the speed limit - getting tickets will raise your premiums.

I think the best advise is to simply become more aware or what you are doing. What are you spending your money on each day? Each week? Each month? Look at it -- what does that say about you? Is that what you want to be doing?

Educate yourself on the options out there for saving money -- such as tips for saving at ceratin stores, coupons, lower interest rates on credit cards to transfer high balances to save, homemade items vs. store bought etc...

I always think that having information is the best weapon for any situation. I am surprised it took me so long to apply it to this area of my life.

I agree with really just being aware of your spending. Look at each purchase carefullly before you make it.

Dave Ramsey's website has a link for comparing insurances. We ended up calling our local agent for guidance. The web thing was too impersonal.

1. Shop at consignment stores or thrift stores first.
2. Ask yourself "Do I really need this item?" before purchasing something.
3. Don't buy it if you have to charge it.
