I tallied up our expenses on our shared credit card. (We charge anything over $10.)

I couldn't believe it. Our grocery bill was $350. Our gas bill was $342. We spent almost as much for gas as for groceries???? As my parents always said, the sad thing about both expenses is that you have nothing to show for them.

What a reality check. (That and the $50.03 I just spent to fill up our family van.)

Has anybody else noticed their gasoline bill edging (or exceeding) their grocery bill?

Here are a few ideas I thought of to help improve my situation. Other suggestions are welcome.

- DH is taking the bus ($3.50 a round trip) at least once a week to work.
- Minimize, minimize, minimize driving.
- We have a small car and a minivan. As much as possible we will use the small car.

I'm interesting in hearing how other people's grocery bills compare w/their gasoline bills.

oh yeah.
I havent bought groceries in almost 2 months. Every week we put $65+ in gas.
Luckily for me I freeze a ton and was about 2 months ahead on groceries so all weve bought was milk, and eggs. but we really dont have much now. the price of gas has really affected where we spend our other money.
plus groceries have gone up like mad.

it's crazy, but the price of gas dropped here from 3.49 to 3.45 today. Very strange. Anyway, I drive a minivan and my husband drives a small car...so we take the small car whenever we can. I figure it costs about .20/mile for me to drive somewhere...it's all stop signs and traffic lights...so I try to firgure out if the trip is worth it or not. I also try not to drive like a maniac when I do go somewhere. My parents live 200 miles away so when the kids and I go there we take the car. Unfortunately, even though we are only 1.5 miles away from Walmart...it's literally across a road from our subdivision...that road just happens to be super busy, so it's not the best place to walk to with a stroller. It's really frustrating, this entire area (aside from our subdivision) was built in the last couple of years...I wish they would have made things more walker friendly.

On a side note, we have tons of construction going on around here so there are always several construction vehicles on the road. I used to get so mad when I got behind one b/c they drove so slow...now I try to get behind them so I can drive slower and noone will blame me.

Our gas bill exceeds our grocery bill. I am so carefull with the grocery's as I know it is one place that I can be very careful with, however we still need to drive to work and back everyday. Its making me crazy trying to figure out how to reduce our gas bill.

Last month I was griping about this....$450 gas & $650 food...my cc bill is driving me crazy. In two weeks my job goes to a 4 day work week which should help (although I will feel like a prisoner if I don't get out a little), so that should help with the daily 36 mile commute in a minivan. I wish I had coupons for gas like I have for food. Stop & Shop does offer $.10 off per gallon, but that's it. Oh, and up here in Boston, its still ~ 40 degrees (same forecast all week) so our heat is still on......

Luckily We are only Putting gas in My van - And Right now that is about 45-50.00 Every other week.

So No .....we are no Where Near our Grocery Bill of Over 800.00 A Month.

DH has a company gas card and thank the lord - cause He Is using over 1000.00 a month in gas. His Gas bill will exceed our grocery bill for a long time.

Oh yes - every week the van takes a bigger bite out of our budget. We are trying to stay home at least two days a week now. We are also anal retentive about grouping errands. I don't let anything wait anymore, even if the kids are fussy.

ETA: We are spending around $70 a week for gas now and about $130 a week on groceries/household expenses.

DH and I work in the same bldg- so we use the minivan to go to work and drive together as much as possible. Sometimes we cant though We only live 2 miles from work - but after taking the oldest to my MIL for the schoolbus and the youngest at daycare it turns in to a 10 mile trip.
our gas for one month is about 400 or 500 , grocery is about 300 we have double coupons up to a dollar here- so that helps alot!!
