Saying they need life skills is not talking about them like they are a worthless piece of crap. I think a lot of people on food stamps (not all) but a lot, would benefit from some cooking and nutritional classes. Buying your kids a treat once in a while is fine. Having a cart full of junk food is not.

When someone says life skills that is implying they don't know how to take care of their children or themselves. Well ya know what there are people that aren't on food stamps that eat a hell of alot more junk food then some people on food stamps. I still think it is rude to look down on them like they are crap. Who are you to say they don't know how to cook or anything about nutrtiton?

Well I'm sorry, but if someone buys a cart full of junk food, then IMO they don't know a lot about good nutrition and could use some help in that area. I personally think there should be certain foods that are off limits if someone is using food stamps.

I really don't think that she meant that the people don't know how to take care of themselves and their children. I know plenty of people on food stamps and off that would benefit from a nutrition class or frugal cooking class. I think her point was that it might be beneficial (for both the people receiving aid as well as the goverment) if the money the government was doling out for food was supplemented with information on how to make the money/food stretch. At least that's how I interpreted it. I honestly don't think it's a bad idea, either, and I'm not judging anyone. I do know some people need the money, and use it wisely, but I think it's hard for people to get past the fact that when you get down to it, the government is taking money that you worked hard to earn and giving it to someone else. I don't think most people have a problem aiding the citizens who really need it (I certainly don't), but for every person who honestly needs the money and appreciates it, there is another buying garbage with it and being wasteful. I think it's upsetting because many of us can't afford to be wasteful with the money we ourselves have left after taxes (not that we'd want to be, but that's besides the point). I think that's possibly what a lot of people have a problem with. I look across the street and see my neighbors every day, and it's hard for me to think that I am paying for them to sit around on their behinds and eat twinkies while my husband and I work our butts off every day (which I do know their back story and they are definitely abusing the system, I'm not just being judgemental). I think that aid for people who have fallen into hard times is a wonderful thing, and it has helped many families to stay afloat and get back on their feet, but I think that there definitely needs to be some reform to the system. No offense to anyone at all, I'm not saying all people on assistance are freeloaders or anything like that. Just clarifying and adding some thoughts.

Also.... I can't believe this thread is still going!

Amen! This is a very old thread that was bumped up yesterday. This topic has been discussed over and over again. Yes there are people out there who truely need assistance and it should be available to them. And yes there are people that abuse the system. Life is about choices and unfortuately not everyone makes educated decision or decisions in the best interest of their children.

Now can we move on from this topic please. There are always two sides to every story.

If you don't want people to post in this thread anymore then why not just lock it?

Sorry if this has been done to death, I just read it today. But I do want to make my intentions clear. I am NOT suggesting that needing government assistance makes ANYONE worthless. I am simply stating that it is our failing as a society that these people were not taught how to survive on a reasonable amount of money for food (more money than a lot of us have). Life skills are a learned behavior. There are many different types of life skills, none of us have the life skills to live in every situation. I would die in a matter of hours in a third world jungle. I am just stating that we as a society should stop sitting in our ivory tower and throw money at the people who are struggling, and truely help them. I am Not saying that their benifits should be cut, just stop throwing more money at them.
My family is not well off and neither was my husband's. Both families needed help at one time. Please don't imply that I don't have respect for the people who are truely struggling. I feel that it is more disrespectful to assume that we should just throw money at the "problem" and ignore that the "problem" are human beings, who need true help, not just money.

And how exactly do you know people with junk food in there cart are on FS? Do you follow them to the checkout line to see? I doubt it. People with and without food stamps are entitled to the buy the same foods. There is no approved food list! People without fs buy junk food too! Stop stereotyping!
