Some states tax all food and not just prepared foods.

That is true but I still don't think it would let you buy prepared\cook foods.

My state allows you to buy prepared food with foodstamps as long as it's cold. If it's hot it won't pay for it. If I buy pasta salad from the deli counter the foodstamps would pay for it. If I bought a rotisserie chicken the foodstamps would not.

Same here. You also end up paying tax on any coupons you used to save money as well. When I was a CSM I ended up having to ring up a poor woman on food stamps after the pharmacist refused to ring her up because he didn't agree that she should be allowed to use her food stamps to buy soda or candy. I remeber that poor woman's face. No one should be made to feel that way IMO. It's hard enough to have to ask for help as an adult without being made to feel horrible for buying a "treat".

Mine will cover cold salads and sandwhiches and stuff and even birthday cake. But nothing hot.

I'm sure a lot of people won't agree with me on this...but I'm glad to read this response. I have been scraping to get the money together for ds's bday, money for presents, cake and munchies, it's tough, even with a dh working 2 jobs! I can't imagine being a Mom (single or not) and not being able to provide bday treats for my kids, the thought makes me sick and want to cry. Thank goodnees food stamps can be used to provide special party foods for bdays, graduations, etc. All people should be valued and are allowed to celebrate sometimes.

This is crazy I live in the Dc metro area and we are a familly of 4 and I spend about $300.00 a month in groceries using coupons etc (without counting my hubby lunches)...I do not get it. Plus She gets help for housing and she is able to go to school so I guess she has day care taking care of too....
I think most of the people that gave their opinions were'nt judging, but me too I feel like this is not fair in some cases. I cannot afford day care so I cannot go to school full time (cannot work either since I would not make enough to pay for day care) I spend hours doing coupons and try to find good deals and some people have it all.

What do you mean, that "some people have it all"?

I absolutely did not feel 'I had it all' when we got foodstamps. Embarrassment and relief is what I felt. I was the only one working at the time while my dh was in school fulltime. I worked the schedule to where he could watch the kids. Why shouldn't anyone on fs go to school to better their situation? They should almost require it. Everyone sounds so hateful and jealous of people with the fs because they can buy brand name or whatever they want. They fail to see the reason as to why they are on them to begin with. Yes there are people who take advantage but it's not the majority who do. And yes some people could really benefit from a class to learn how to cook and stretch them, I'll give ya'll that. But for what it's worth I never ever felt like I had it all. I felt like I had nothing at all.
