Well, my Dad never once owned a credit card, nor did I ever see him even write a check. He always bought everything with cash. He owned several cars (including a DeLorean, Corvettes, etc.) which were all paid for in cash, as well as his homes. I guess he just had this fear of putting his money into a bank, and to this day I, myself, still have no bank account - but that also means I have no credit, which you seem to have to have these days to buy anything. So, I guess his message to us was to "wait until you have the money to buy something, to never be sucked into owing anyone for anything, and be aware of who has 'control' of your money."
He also always said to us (jokingly) "Save your pennies!", if we asked for him to buy something for us. So, I always have! (lol) It's been "engrained in my head", if you will. You'd be surprised how many times cashing in my penny stash has saved me in a pinch!!
