It would depend on what you mean by productive life.
It costs very little to expand your knowledge and I find that VERY productive. You can check out books for free from the libarary and educate yourself. Learn to cook, learn a new hobby, learn about a period of time you find interesting, etc...
It costs very little to volunteer. You can improve the lives of others through your actions and maybe even get a little entertainment for yourself. Look into outdoor improvement projects, community events where you volunteer and get free admission to an event, volunteer at a child's camp, etc...
For me organizing and cleaning are pretty much low cost events that might even net me some cash if I sell what I find. If I am not in the mood to sell I donate and pass on what I don't use to someone else.
I often "picnic" with my children. We need to eat anyway so if I take the food to the front lawn and pretend we are on an expedition they think its hysterical. I have been known to set out tent up in our backyard and have a great adventure.
For me some of the best things I do don't cost anything at all.
