With the current gas situation and everyone feeling the pinch, do any of you intend on trading in or selling your larger sized vehicle for a family size car that gives you better mileage to the gallon?

I have to admit, we used to own a Jeep Grand Cherokee, LTD, and we traded it in for a family car (Mazda 5) so that we could get more miles to the gallon but also because we found the Jeep was not very family friendly. The kids were young when we traded it in and had a heck of a time getting in and out of the car themselves. This was 3 years ago and I'm so glad we did it. Especially now. IT was a gas guzzler for sure!

We have one major gas guzzler-2002 Tahoe. That is the only vehicle that really hurts to gas up. DH HAS to use it for business we dont have anyway of getting out of using it. My van 1992 Ford Aerostar, doesnt do too bad on gas. But it is really the only vehicle where we all fit in if we go anywhere with the five of us. We do have my old Suzuki Sidekick that does great on gas. I let the tags on it expire since we were not driving it and thinking of selling it. We may keep it just for a vehicle to putt around in town. It would be a really good vehicle for us to drive to work.

I guess I didnt really anwer your question. No we will not be trading in the Tahoe (only one we owe money on) anytime soon. One, it is almost paid for so I do not want to start over with car payments right away and two, we could not get away with getting anything smaller than the Tahoe since dh needs its size for hauling his equipment in.

My husband sold his '92 Jeep Wrangler and we bought a 2001 Jetta TDI, He went from 16mpg to almost 50mpg. We were able to pay cash for the Jetta. The Jeep also had 200,000+ miles. I can't remember exactly how many miles.

I have a '99 Suburban 75,000 miles, 45 gallon tank. It costs $175 to fill it up It will be paid off in December. I would love to get a used Jetta Passat Wagon. We are in love with the Jetta. However!!! No one wants my big ole gas hog. I fear I won't be able to get a dime for it. I realize that I would have to drive many miles to make up the difference. Like your family Christy, my girls like being able to get in and out by themselves. Having said all that, we will probably be stuck with the Suburban for awhile.

Yes I still owe money on my van too so I doubt we'll do anything with it soon. Even so, even after its paid off in a few months, we'll keep it till it just won't drive anymore. I just can't do with a car payment after this is paid off. I just don't go anywhere except work and back and taking the kids to their activities. My car sits in the driveway the rest of the time.

I believe that!

We would try to sell ours on the internet, yahoo, ebay, etc. We sold our Jeep on ebay. A Wrangler is much easier to get rid of, it is a project or 3rd vehicle for some.

We just bought a mini-van six months ago. In all honesty, I hate the fill-ups, but as my husband pointed out, it isn't like our Camry got all that much better gas mileage. Sometimes I do wish that we had waited a little longer before buying it. We didn't wait longer 1) because we got a great deal on our Odyssey and 2) because we were concerned about the safety of our Camry (our family car) which was 12 years old and had a few issues. We would have bought a van eventually anyway because of space issues (#3 is due in November).

At the time we did consider buying a hybrid Camry and putting three car seats across the back. Now I'm really glad we didn't. We have so much more space to haul things in the van and when we go somewhere with grandparents, we don't have to take two cars.

So yes, it sucks that we have to pay a little more, but no, we won't be trading in anytime soon (unless, of course, Toyota finally brings the hybrid Sienna to the US market).

We have 2 gas guzzlers-a truck and an SUV. The truck is paid for and the SUV will be paid for next year, so for now, we're stuck. I doubt we would get what we want for either vehicle since they are gas hogs. Thankfully, DH and I both work in the town we live in and we have cut our everyday driving down considerable. Even when our SUV is paid off, we won't be getting anything different for a while, so we can catch up on some other bills.

No. We have an Odyssey that gets about 23 mpg on the highway, but we need it for space with the kids and parents. We paid cash for it so it would cost us more to buy a new one than our savings in gas would be. Same thing with my dh's Explorer. At this point, we are just being conservative in our usage.

We have a mini van but its paid off, so were keeping it as for the moment higher gas prices are better than a car payment!
