That is my bill for our heating oil top-off today!! I don't know how people are going to make it through this winter around here. Oil is what a lot of homes around here use for heating. The price right now is $4.66/gal, and going up along with everything else. If we were to heat exclusively with oil, we would have to be filling our tank every 5-6 weeks October-April. We plan to use the woodstove primarily, but there is a run on cordwood, and we can't seem to get any wood on our property! DH was planning on having it split and stacked by now, but we still haven't heard back from a couple different guys, and we ordered it in April! It is very stressful. Right now we are only turning our oil burner on for a few hours in the evening to get hot water for showers and washing dishes. Otherwise the burner would be kicking on once an hour or so to have hot water ready on demand. Ugh!!!!

Wow! I remember when I lived at home yet( over 17 years ago) we paid just a little over a dollar a gallon for heating oil. How long will that top off last you til?

I don't know... this is the first time we've tried turning the burner off completely when we're not using hot water. Hopefully until the end of October or mid-November?

That is crazy.

We use Natural Gas for heat around here (mostly although some people use electricity) and I thought it was pricy but you have us beat by a mile. I suppose i will quit complaining now.

We went through over 2000 gallons of propane last winter (poorly insulated house). I think it was about 2200-2500 or something - 5 full fills. We had a "deal" at about $0.10 less than the average - about $2.20/gal.

That kind of math sucks.

Make sure to call around and make sure you are getting the best price. I can pull up the average prices through the state public service commission. Last winter, one company group was charging $3-4 per gallon for propane, when the average was around $2.30-$2.50/gal. They got sued.

I have your same worry, Sarah. Although it will be a struggle for us to pay for heat this winter, we will be able to do it. I'm not sure about many of the people who live around us . . . .

ouch that sucks... there are a different fuels we use #2 wich is diesal gas to run our furnace last winter(wich was cold for the first time in along time we used 1 1/2 tanks so that is 375 gallons for us(wich we have not used that much in 7 years) so it cost us last winter about $1100.00. we do have a half a tank left and will top it off in july that will keep us warm until about febuary.. everything else runs off electric so thats the bill that kills us.

we are almost complete putting thermal window curtains on all of our windows and i'm making no-sew fleece blankets for winter and we did get everyone a down comforter now so that keeps us warm come winter hopefully it won't be a cold cold one..

Ouch. I hate to hear that.

This winter is just going to be awful for everyone. It is June, and I am already dreading it. A lot of people are really going to be hurting.

I had never even heard of oil until last year on MS people were talking about the price. I was shocked then, I am still shocked now!

Is it certain areas of the country that use oil? Or what? I've lived in 5 states and we have always had electric. Now I'm very thankful!

I'm worried about the costs of fuel this winter and how a lot of people are going to pay for it. I think I may start padding my electric bill this summer ... just to help cushion it this winter.
