They are saying that due to flooding in the Midwest we can expect food prices to go up even more. Entire farms are flooded and have lost all their crops.

I was thinking about this the other day when I saw on the news about all the flooding!

I am starting to worry more for families that are barely making ends meet now and then to come into more expenses for the neccesities!

I will gladly pay a bit more if people get the help they need after such a tragedy. God be with them-

Stupid question but what kinds of food items would be effected by this? I have no idea what crops they farm in these areas. I hate to think about stockpiling but I guess it only makes sense to get some more staples just in case.

I feel so sorry for people effected by these floods they seem horrible.

Here in Iowa the main crop is corn. Anything with corn or sweetened with corn syrup will probably be affected.

Yes. Corn is a big one. Also soybeans. So anything with soy protein, soy lecithin, etc. etc. etc. will be going up.

I'm in the midwest also, and I was just talking with DH about this the other day. Even many of the farmers that don't currently have water standing in their fields have simply not been able to plant their crops because it has been unbelievably wet. They should have been completely finished planting weeks ago. So there is simply nothing growing, meaning nothing to be harvested in the fall. It is really sad. This affects some of the people we know personally.

yep many fields are completely flooded or it has rained so much some here were not even completely in.. so your corn based and soy based products are going to be hit hard..

also cereals two of the cereal plants in cr iowa are general mills and quacker oats wich is taking on water and been closed for the time being.. that will affect availablitlity of some of these products.

I was watching this on the Today show this morning and I just am very sad at what I am seeing. I saw complete towns under water.

Thank you for the information and I hope you are all safe.

i have a feeling all season is gonna be bad with the weather. even up hear prices are going up as stores reopen after the storms and tornado. haven't had one touch down seance 1958. anything refrigerated had to be replaced. we still have outages. they have even pulled in the national Gard. then with the floods affecting prices food is gonna be worse then gas around hear. if the weather we are having hear is anything like where the floods are it's not gonna dry out.
