My main grocery store is Aldi and I use the expensive, major grocery stores to fill in the gaps. Well yesterday I needed a half cart of items and the main roads were closed due to a parade. I decided to go to Giant Eagle instead of Aldi. I had only around 12-15 items in my cart and nearly fell over when the bill came to $58!!

When I came home, dh announced he wanted to go to Aldi to get some steaks for the grill today. So I got out my receipt for Giant Eagle and made a list of what I could have gotten at Aldi. When we got there, I added up what I paid at Giant Eagle for the exact same items. The difference on these few items was over $13! We re-bought the items at Aldi and took back the stuff to Giant Eagle. In the end we were ahead $21 because since I didn't have my Giant Eagle card, on top of what was more expensive using the card, I paid even more because I didn't have it. They were very nice and adjusted everything.

With our savings we went to a festival all afternoon It was a pain but I'm glad it happened. I really know that I am saving a ton of money. Sometimes I get used to their prices and get 'spoiled'. All the time I kept thinking, "dh makes a good living and we Still need to save this money. What about the people that don't - how on earth do They afford those prices" I've also noticed a LOT more people shopping at Aldi. With gas prices people just can't afford fancy stores anymore!!

When we were in St Louis I would go with my sister in law. We don't have and Aldis down here...HEB dominates.

I don't have an Aldi close by, so I do get almost all my groceries at either the supermarket or CVS.
I use coupons and match them with sales. THat's how we afford the things we buy. I don't know how other people do it-- just walking around the store and buying what they feel like buying.

That is quite a savings!!! I don't think it ever would have occurred to me to return groceries though!!! I would have chalked it up to a lesson learned.

I have returned groceries as well--often. I check all large bags of produce when I get home and if anything is rotten it gets returned the next day. I am really tired of people putting the worst potatoes/fruit/onions at the bottom so that we can not see them and expecting us to pay for the rotten ones--I do not--if there is bad one I return it and get a new bag/box

I am incredibly lucky that I have a Giant Eagle,WalMart(Supercenter)and an Aldis all w/in a 1/2 a mile stretch of each other.(GE and Aldis are actually in the same parking lot)not to mention 3 dollar stores in between them.

I absolutely love Giant Eagle....but it's like any major grocery chain...you gotta know your stuff...if you're crafty w/coupons and rebates.......you can make an absolute KILLING on their BOGO and 10/$10 deals.(specially if your GE doubles coupons, which thankfully mine does)

Good going! It annoys me when I have to pay for broccoli by weight but they leave loads of the stalk on it so It weighs twice as much. Why should I pay for the stalk which I can't even eat?!

I shop at both, but most of my shopping at Giant Eagle is done with coupons and their sales!
