Does anyone have any tips on cutting down on their water bill. I know the main ones--like you can wait to flush the toilet or turning the faucet off when you brush your teeth--but they do not seem to make a real dent. Any thoughts???

Use the dishwasher. Run full loads.

Replace your shower heads with a low flow shower head. When taking a shower, turn the water off while you lather up.

If you have to run the water in the bath to warm it up before you turn on the shower, catch the water in a bucket and use it to water plants in your house and pots outside. You would be amazed how much water is saved when you catch the warm up water from every shower, I never have to pull out the hose to water plants (we are currently in a drought here so we are letting most of the grass go dormant, we're just occasionally watering the back where ds plays)

When I need to empty the kids swimming pool I use that water to water the plants/grass.

I also use the "warm-up" water to fill water bottles to put in the fridge.

We're going to try the "each kid gets 1 bowl,1 plate and one set of silverwear" ,then when they're done with it they have to wash it at the sink....we've been running our dishwasher every other day and I think it's using way too much water, plus it's like 20 years old so it eats up electric too! I saw this in family Fun magazine...I figure we have more free time in the summer so they can start taking on a little more responsibility now that they're 9 and almost 6 y.o.

The only water saving trick I know is about putting something in the toilet tank, but I think that is just for old toilets....

Take camper showers - turn your shower on, get wet, turn the water off, lather up, from head to toe, turn the water back on to rinse. also you could save the children's bath water to water your plants, only run your washer and dishwasher when completely full. learn to wear outer clothes more than once before washing, use only one set of dishes per person per day, and finally all the before mentioned things like turn the water off when brushing etc. HTH!
