....And so it begins. Today we went to HyVee and a gallon of milk went up
$.40. I heard on the news to expect grocery prices to go up 7% this year and 7% more next year. Not only will anything made from corn and soybeans go up, but dairy as well because their feed for the cows is going up as well.

Has anyone else noticed a big jump like that on items at the store already?

Our Milk is still the same price, I havn't noticed that going up yet. But over my last grocery trip I DID notice lots of other things going up. And I heard that on the news too, about wheat and soy items going up. Farmers in Iowa lost whole acres of crops. That is SO hard to recover from. They were already late in planting, then they lost everything.

I buy organic milk and the price for a half gallon has gone up a whole dollar since the beginning of the year. When I was at Kroger this weekend I noticed the cheese had really gone up too. A small block of Kroger brand cheddar (the same size as those little Kraft ones) was $4.10. I checked all the brands and they were even more. Ouch!

Ouch. I can't think of a lot of things that have gone up but I know a lot have. I did notice that maple syrup went up - so wasn't happy abut that. Bread has gone way up around here. I am seriously considering making my own. I also have sort of stocked up on pasta - not a lot but a few extra packs thinking it may go up - I did notice that some pasta had gone up. It seems the things I have seen price raises on have been a lot more than only 7% - when something goes from $2 to $3 that is actually 50% increase and those are the kind of increases I am seeing left and right lately. Bread has gone from$2.50 to $4 something a loaf again a lot more than 7%.

Forgot to say I am not looking forward to the next few months as I am sure we are going to see a lot of price increases from the floods in the midwest.

I haven't been to the store since last week but then flour has more than doubled since the end of April, from 79 cents to $1.92 for 5lbs.

The price of cooking oil has really gone up too. I was paying around $6 for a gallon of canola oil and it's now almost $9.

In the past year I have budgeted $200 per month for my monthly "Wal Mart Run" where I get all of my household goods and staples like flour, cereal, etc. (Bread, fresh food, and milk are extra). But in the last few months I haven't been able to get out of there for less than $250.

Also, I am almost positive that about a year ago when school started I paid $1.86 for a gallon of milk at Wal Mart. Two days ago it was $3.27.

I don't know that I would notice the difference so much but I only go to Wal Mart once a month so it hits all at once. (I do that because if I go more often I spent a ton of money there.)

Wow, a gallon of the Great Value brand milk here is $4.29. At least this week Walgreens has milk on sale for $3.29. I don't think I've paid less than $3 a gallon for milk in at least 3 years.

DH said he saw on the news that, because of the flooding in addition to the other factors, pork is expected to go up 65%, beef 30-35%. Can't remember the others. Something was only 15%--maybe chicken?

Makes me wish we had ANY kind of room in our house for a deep freezer; I am still seeing good prices, but I can only fit so much into my top-of-fridge freezer.
