I'm a mother of 2 boys 5 and 6. We did away with cable when the boys were 2 and 3. We have one television in the living room and if they want to watch something, we are usually there with them watching. We haven't really introduced video games either.
We got rid of cable for a couple of reasons. #1. WE used to zone out in front of the TV and the same programming is on almost all of the stations.
#2. We were paying $60 bucks a month and it kept incrementing every few months. Wasn't worth it.
So we took the nose dive. We bought videos of the shows the boys would watch the most of, (thomas the train), found most of them on Freecycle, at yard sales and for Xmas presents. PBS has plenty of quality shows for the kids to watch and there is always Saturday morning cartoons. We have a full evening when we come home, so when they are not doing homework or chores, we encourage them to get outside.
