I guess it just depends on what it is. I can make my own clothes, but I don't always. DH does our yard, but I wouldn't do it if he weren't around, I would pay someone. I would rather cook my families meals from scratch then go out/bring in take out/ or even buy boxed meals (although I have been known to do that once in a while.

The only things we hire people for are the things we can't do ourselves.

Currently we only pay for things we can't do ourselves. I would love to have some one come a do a few handyman type jobs around here and wouldn't mind paying a reasonable rate if the person knew what they were doing and would do it in a timely manner. I love DH but he isn't the handiest but he tries. I would also love to have someone clean the house and mow the lawn but not very likely at this point but a girl can dream. I don't think there is anything wrong with hiring out to do something you can do if you can afford it (meaning all your bills are pain and you are putting money in savings) if it means more time to spend with your family. That is priceless.

The only things we'll hire out are things that can kill us if we aren't competent. That's electrical (but not always) and gas lines. Only exceptions were our roof since the decking had to be replaced, the septic system, and the water well. Some things you just have to hire out.

Everything else, we do, or learn how to do. After renovating 3 homes, we've learned how to do just about everything associated with home improvement.

Though I hate to pay for mowing, cleaning the car, Trugreen and a few other things, DH will hire someone if there is somebody to do it. We have clashed a lot on this, but now I try my best to not let this bother me. He is still behind my back to hire somebody to clean - I WANT to clean my house MY way.

I also wanted to add I really enjoy doing things like mowing the yard, yard work, home improvements etc. DH can do a lot of electrical stuff, and will be doing the roof shortly. Though my lawnmower is pissing me off, I like the feeling I get when I actually finish fixing it (again!) Since something new breaks every time, I'm getting more and more confident - though my secret goal now is to buy a higher quality brand off Craigslist (likea John Deere or Cub Cadet) - preferably broken so I can get it cheap and fix it. The one we have now is a very low quality brand, hence the repeated breaks.

I don't think there is anything wrong with others hiring out, for family time or what not. I just am happiest with dirty hands - that's now about the only real me time I get. DH has to take the baby when I have grease up to my elbows.

Oh, we do hire out major car repairs, but do the minor ones ourselves - usually DH, but I've helped often. Oil changes we do ourselves.

The only time we actually hired someone was when we had our cement put in for the garage and driveway because my DH was on overtime and then when we needed our roof reshingled because it was the same scenerio. Otherwise we do everything ourselves.

Man I am feeling guilty about wanting someone to clean my house 1 or 2 times (mind you I do the organising) I just cannot stand the pain of bending these days!! I plan on having a cleaning person come right before the baby is born so I can have a clean house to come home to and if we have company I do not feel soo bad about my house and whata lousy person I am (my MIL will def make a statment of what abad mother I am for having a messy house

I Wouldn't ever want a House cleaner , unless I Was physically unable to do it.
I Like my house a Certain way ,
and
A) I Would Be stressed Out about the housecleaner Coming out and that my house had to be Cleaned up at least , so She could deep clean...and I Would probably Re- do alot of things that she did anyway, ecspecially bathrooms. ...
So I just can't see it.

Things we definatly pay for without even thinking about it.

Resealing the driveway.
carpet cleaning
Lawn and Tree Treatments
Car , tractor and Snow blower maitenence and Oil changes.
electric work

I Guess when you think about it there is alot we can Do ourselves!!
