Has anyone heard of Angel Food Ministry? I heard that it is not really a food bank but a place (usually at churches) where you pay $25 and you recieve a lot of food. My aunt called to tell me that a church close by was accepted for this service and will start mid December. I am pretty sure that I may enter into this program (there is no income guidelines or anything, you just pay cash and then you pick up your order when they arrive). Does anyone use this service that can tell me a little more about it? Thanks!

i use angel food ministries if you go to there website angelfoodministries.org and click on menu you can see what you get in next months food box for and idea of how much you get. plus they offer specials (there are 3 different ones each month) usually run $18 buck a special you have to buy the food box in order to buy the specials you can get as many food boxes and specials you want. the chicken is really good! it has really help stock my freezer and helps us out on the short weeks. you should give it a try to see if you like it.

We use it on occasion and it has really helped us stock the freezer. The $25 box is supposed to feed a family of 4 for a week, but it feeds us longer - granted, I buy salads and such to supplement the meat and sides provided. There aren't any income requirements and so far everything we have received has been excellent!! The meat specials are usally a pretty good deal. We have gotten everything from the basic mac n cheese and pork chops to fresh bread and pumpkins.
I thought I'd feel funny doing it, as technically we are not "in need", but it has sure helped my grocery budget and the folks at the church are fabulous!!
Just take a huge box or 2 to hold the food.

Thanks everyone! I thought it would help us out greatly in December (Hubby only gets paid 1x before Christmas)- and it seems like everything is due for us that month (inspection, home owners, etc. basically all the bills that you forget about and come to bite you in the butt!). I don't think I will feel too bad about using it because you do have to pay for it, I know I would feel guilty if I went to a "food bank" for the simple fact that we have more than what most people have that use that service. Thanks again!

You can check online, too, for the menu of the next month! We have only done it once, but it sure helped us out that month.

I wish we had this in ND. We have so many people who could benefit from this but the amount of orders we would need is over 1000. I'm sure it's because of shipping costs. If anyone knows of another orgnization like this I sure would appreciate it.

My Mom and I were getting the food over the summer but the host church we were going through had some scheduling issues that made it difficult (they changed the food pick -up three times one weekend). One time my mom ordered a beef grill package that was supposed to have New York Strip Steaks in it, they ran out or didn't get them and she was given popcorn chicken in it's place. It was a lot of popcorn chicken but I doubt is was $18 worth and it upset A LOT of people.
I've decided I'm going to start getting it again, it's usually quick and easy and does last a while.

I've been using it for about a year and have been pretty happy with most of it. I think that most of the beef cuts are a bit chewy and are not the best, but the rest of the products have been good. You get a ton of chicken with them, so you need to have a lot of good recipes for it or it will get old fast.

Actually, I think the beef cuts we get are really good. Most of them are very tender, and I like that they're individually vacuum packed so they last longer. I've never gotten a bonus box of meat, so maybe that's where you've found the kind-of-chewy meats. The bonus boxes most of the time don't seem like a good enough value for me, but we have a really good discount grocery store that has awesome meat prices here, so 9 times out of 10, I can beat the prices of the bonus box by just shopping there. As for the normal box, we've gotten it a lot. The food is really good. I kind of thought it might be low quality, but it isn't. They do have a good bit of chicken, but I throw about half of it right into the crockpot with some chicken broth and cook it until it falls apart, then strip the meat off, portion out and freeze for later use (chicken pot pie, chicken & dumplings, soup, casseroles, pizza, chili, stir-fry, stuffed peppers, fajitas, etc). We don't necessarily eat all of the food from the box within the month we get it, but it does very well to supplement our groceries some months. I'm a fanatic about prices per # and know the comparable costs of groceries pretty well, so I look at next month's menu online and calculate real quick whether or not it's worth ordering. Some months yes, other months I can get the same staples offered (meat, etc) in the store for the same price or cheaper. Oh, and you can't be brand sensitive.. because most of the time you don't get "Jell-o" pudding -- you get the no-brand stuff.
