Funny thing, I was just talking to my mom last night about how everything is going up and she had just gone to Aldi's and was telling me about how prices have risen there as well. It makes me want to go shopping there this weekend less and less. I could always fall back onto Aldi's and save considerable amounts of money, but now, it will probably just be a few dollars less.
I've had to put things back, but not when I was checking out... I usually right the prices down and try to get a ballpark figure of what the total will be. I wonder why Aldi's won't take checks? They could have one of those machines that it comes right out of your account that day, most stores do that now anyway.

Aw, I'm sure no one thought anything about it! That has also happened to me before, but I never really worried about what anyone thought.

I was SO embarrased one time at Walmart for something similar with my debit card. I get direct deposit with my paycheck, so I kept watching my bank acct till I saw the deposit. As soon as I saw it online, I grabbed the kids and went grocery shopping. I bought about $100 worth of groceries, but when I went to check out, I slid my card and it was denied!! I was mortified! And I KNEW there was money in the acct.
They took me out of line, I had to call my bank, and basically what happened was, even though the deposit was there, it was not immeidatly available. (Even though it was payroll, not just a check deposit) Walmart's computer didn't update itself yet I guess, and did see the new balance in my acct and denied my card. I ended up having to visit an ATM, taking out what I needed in cash, and paying my grocery bill that way. I felt like everyone had thier eyes on me. I made sure that never happened again.

Does this bother anybody else?
The people in line at ALDI and ESPECIALLY the cashiers are SO fast and furious!! They act like they have to shuffle you thru as quickly as possible, and I'm sure that it's some sort of company policy that, since their prices are so low, service is kept at a minimum as well. But they act like the customers are sheep to be worked and put thru as quickly as humanly possible--scan it and throw it in the cart, push the cart out of the way, demand the next cart, and rush the debit card! And the people behind me, sensing the urgency of the clerk, start to glare and stomping a little in anticipation of their leg of the race. It's nerve wracking!
Other than that, I love that store! But that bit makes it MUCH more embarassing when something goes wrong. And they hate me when I bring in a "green" grocery bag and don't use a cart, for quick trips! lol

I also noticed their price increase when I was there last week. It was like 10 20 cents more for a lot of the items and that adds up when you buy a lot and know what you normally spend there. And it's very difficult when you are on a tight budget and no extra room for error. Hopefully now that gas prices are falling, food prices will start to follow.

Don't be embarassed! I have seen it happen all the time where people ring up more than they have on hand. I bet most of the people in line behind you have done it too.
I don't have a debit card either (and will never get one for security purposes) so this is how I shop at Aldi's with cash: I add things up in my head by rounding-UP to the closest dollar as I am adding things to my cart, it is a really easy way to add things up and still stay under budget. If you want to get closer to your limit, I would suggest bringing a calculator (or if you are blessed with a quick brain and sufficient sleep, obviously you can use your head ).

I had a situation like that when ds was little. We had just bought a car seat and I had no idea there was a limit on daily use of our debit card. We went to pick up some groceries at Walmart and our card was denied. We had just put in our tax refund check so I knew the money was there. They would not even consider taking a check because my card was denied. It was Saturday and I had to wait until Monday to talk to the bank. What was even more embarassing was having to borrow money from my mom to buy formula and gas for the weekend. I learned to always take out some cash for emergencies and not always depend on our card.

Don't feel bad, I have had that happen to me more than a handful of times! One time, I was so desperate for food and did not have enough time to go back, I called my dh up to meet me w/more $$
The people at the grocery store are always so nice, like its no big deal. I have been traumatized so many times that the only reason I carry a cc w/me is to have a "backup" in case my debit card doesn't work or something!

I have been lucky and never had this happen. I never go into Aldies without at least 100.00. Depending on my list, sometimes even 200.00. I think I would crawl in a whole if something like that happen to me lol.
