Ok, I was at my best friends today and her 3 yo dd swears! Albeit my friend's fault, her dd says f-in a-hole when she is mad. So I guess she tried soap in her mouth and it doesn't phase her. Then she tried hot mustard and black pepper, still nothing. Now she is doing a drop of hot sauce and it really is not getting the point across but she is dreading it. I was there when she swore 2x and her and I are fine w/any discipline to each other's kids so I was trying to get her to say she was sorry for swearing in front of my kids and to say sorry and for what. Her brother will say fffffffriend and she did say that, so I was trying to encourage her to say that too. My own almost 5 yo dd knows better and I will swear from time to time and apologize for doing so, but she will not. (Unless she's being funny and rhyming the word duck-lol!!) So has anyone else had this problem and what helped?? TIA!!

My children did this when they were little, and I ignored it. Once they figured out that they weren't going to get a reaction out of me they stopped. I personally would not put soap or hot sauce in their mouths. But that's just my opinion.

ITA. I think hot sauce or soap in the mouth is abusive...but that's me. I don't see what purpose it serves. When my kids have used bad words I've just told them it's not acceptable and that was that.

I agree that I would not do that to my own kids, kinda why I posted the question to help her down another route. Her 5 yo is a boy and he is calm and her almost 3 yo dd is a girl and wild as anything and she is the swearer, the older one knows better. I'll tell her to ignore it and see what happens, thanks!!

Soap can actually be poisonous. My pediatrician recommended a spoonful of vinegar..which is not bad for them but tastes awful! I never needed either..but this was said to my friend who had a child that kept telling little lies. It seemed to have worked, too!

A suggestion for your friend...do an "ugly word jar". Give each child a stack of quarters..and everytime they say an ugly word, they put one of their quarters in the jar. At the end of the week, the child with the most quarters gets to spend his/her quarters AND all the quarters in the jar. It is a sure fire way to make someone talk nice the next week!!! (and EVERYONE including MOM and DAD can participate in this one!)

I also would never put soap, hot sauce, etc. into my childs mouth. You say the child got it from her mother. Well maybe the MOTHER should put soap & hot sauce in her own mouth. If the child wasn't seeing such a poor example at home they wouldn't be repeating it. Sorry, but parents who use that kind of language in front of kids really irk me.

LOL!! You guys are absolutely right! I will mention that to her, that's so true! (I'll even tell her dh too). What's good for one is good for the other!
The money jar is a great idea too, I just think her almost 3yo doesn't understand money yet. But I will use that idea for my dd for when she disobeys and bugs the hell out of the baby constantly! thx!!

I may have to try the quarter in a jar thing. My 5 yo swears on occassion but it't more of a tattle-telling capacity. Ex: we were shopping w/my aunt and she said "Dammit", Jackson turns around and says "Mommy she said 'dammit'" How do I punish him for that?

I agree completely!!!!
Kind of do as I say...not as I do...

The mother needs to watch her mouth.
