So I was just sorting through both my girls' laundry and discovered soaking wet, stinky pee- smelling pants in my 4 yo's hamper! I was shocked. My dd has been completely potty trained since 2 1/2 and had on ONE poop accident that first week, and that's it.

I was gone this past weekend and she was here with dh and at his parent's house. Apparently his mom told him when he got back from getting their Christmas tree that she had had a little accident, so I checked the pants she was wearing, and they did have a little pee smell to them too. The ones that were soaked were the ones she was changed into, but dh would have noticed them being THAT wet when he put her in her carseat, and he didn't (notice them wet). Later that night, before their bath, he noticed them a little wet he said, but he didn't notice a smell, he had just thought her sister had splashed her, as she was first in the tub. Then this Monday, she had said she had to go pee, so she did, then she came back wearing different pants. I asked her why she changed them, and she said she liked these (new ones) better. Ok, brushed it off. But she must have put the soiled ones in her hamper and not said anything.

I called the ped. and they said that I've thought of everything that they'd ask, there have been no changes (I have left them before this weekend for a night, rarely, but here and there), no excessive drinking, etc. They wondered if maybe she has a UTI and just hasn't said anything about it hurting to pee...? Of course, she's off at pre-school right now until 11:30, but I'm dying to ask her about this. I do have an appt. for tomorrow morning to see if it is, in fact a UTI.

Do any of you ladies have any experience with this? Can you shed any light? I'm just completely shocked and concerned by the fact that this is happening so long after having been 100% potty trained. Any input would be helpful! TIA

It wasn't recent but I had this problem with my ds when he was about that age....I finally figured out that basically he just didn't want stop what he was doing to go to the bathroom....I think he thought he would miss something ....know what I mean?? especially if he was playing with friends.

But if she actually said she had to go and then went in her pants....I don't know. Maybe she didn't get them off in time...is she waiting too long maybe??

Now that problem I have with my 11 yr old dd...she comes home everyday from school running to the bathroom because she refuses to use the school toilets...(I guess my fear of public bathrooms has rubbed off on her).

completely normal for this age. your ped should have said that as well. I think you are making too big a deal of it so she is now hiding it from you. she doesn't want to disappoint you. I'm sure she also feels bad about it regardless.
just wait til kindergarten. almost all kids start haivng accidents. it happens up until about 1-2 grade.

I actually haven't even said anything to her at all, so there's NO deal being made of it. I just picked her up from preschool and haven't talked to her about it at all. Just wanted to know if others had experienced it. Thanks for the input.

Could she be waiting too long to go to the bathroom ? I know my 3 yr old will wait until the last possible second to get there because she is too busy. Good luck

I just talked to her and told her, first, that I was NOT mad at her at all, but that I was concerned. I asked her if it hurt to pee, and she said, "Absolutely not." Ok, then she said that she didn't want to miss a show or pause it (we have DVR and she knows how to pause it) and she would never do it at anyone else's house...interesting. Oh well, I just stressed that no show (she really only watches 1/2 to one hour of TV a day, if that) is important enough to not go pee. She told me she knows to go on the potty...I'll just chalk it up to being a busy little kid, I'll just remember to ask her if she has to go. Thanks for the feedback!

Good for you for handling it so well. I have to remind my son the same thing - I actually always told him toxins build up when he holds it when he doesn't have to. It worked, at least. Anyway, the other thing I tell ds is to let me know and to put it on the washer, not in the hamper, as it smells up the hamper and other things, and I want to be sure to clean it right away. Not embarrassing them is so important, so I'm happy for you.

My older girls are 8 and 6 and I still remind them. you can tell the way they sit/walk/stand/move. I will ask them if they have to go and then they will say maybe I should try. usually they RUN to the bathroom. and have even just missed getting to the bathroom, esp. with taking off belts. I'm shooting for high school.

I think you did a great job handling it! My son gets so busy with his tractors that he doesn't want to get up. I have to ask as a reminder. We also have a rule that we started when he was potty training - If you stop doing something to do potty then you get to back and do it after going potty. THat does seem to help.

I agree that it is perfectly normal at that age. Ds was all trained by 3 1/2...so I *thought*. He started backsliding because he got more comfortable with the process and just kept delaying. I spent many a day pulling out my hair especially since he was doing so well for so long. He's 5 now and we still need to remind him to go occasionally, but for the most part he'll go at least pee most of the time. I never thought the day would come!!! He still has accidents and I expect he will for awhile! The one thing I learned (and I'm talking about me, I know you said you were relaxed about it) but the more stressed I was about it the much much worse it was. When I just gave into the idea he's gonna be doing this for awhile and to get used to it, he got better. Kids!
