For those families who have children that attend public schools, do your kids know what the significance is of Kindergarten or do they see it as another preschool or church Sunday School? Are they looking forward to going or do they not really know what elementary school is? How are you preparing them for the fall?

My daughter isnt going this Fall, but the Fall of 08. She has known what elem. school was since she started preschool, and she sees the bus go by our house every morning. She knows it is a big deal, and that preschool is getting her ready. She is super excited. Her preschool teacher is awesome, and in the Fall when she begins THREE days a week at preschool she begin their prep program for 4 year olds. Can't wait--she's ready

my son started kindergarten last fall and i think he saw it as independence from mom and dad..and he loves kids. it has been a very great year. he feels big and not like a little kids anymore...i was excited for him i look at it as a new adventure and talked it up to that!

Yes, mine know (and knew when I didn't have one in school). They see the bus. We live behind the school. They talk about it in preschool. So, it would be hard not to know about it. My oldest was excited, but apprehensive, too. My middle son is climbing the walls to go NOW not in August. My youngest, who will be 3 next week, is also excited to go to Kindergarten, but that is not until Fall 2009.

Well ds goes to montessori where they group the kids together: First Years, Second Years, and Kindergarten in one room. The Kindergardeners's are called 'lunch bunchers' because they have lunch at the school (and full days) Tuesday - Thursday with Monday and Friday being half days. They definitely know this is a 'step up'. I have to say though, ds's school goes up until 8th grade, so even when they are first years (3 years old) they are in School. It's not really preschool, the setting is completely different. It looks like a regular elementary school classroom, except the kids are 3 years old.

My kids have all known about kindergarten before they started and luckily I have never had to not start anyone when they were 5 or they would have been very dissappointed!! My not quite 4 yr old is already excited about it and he has more than a year to go!
