My son just turned 3 when he started to write his name, which is Collin. We practiced by laying it out with rocks, sticks and things rather than writing at first. I think your son is doing just fine at his own pace, but maybe he could try a different media to get the pattern down....
Also it's much easier for my guy to write letters at an easel than on a table, I'm not sure why, but he always does better.

Good luck with your sweetie, and I think BabyCenter(as someone mentioned) would be a good resource.

My dd is 3, and she's been writing her name for about a year.. she knows her abc's, and whatnot too.. but she has 2 older siblings, and lots of 'abc' type educational toys.. in the end, they'll get it when they're good and ready! I wouldn't worry...

I thought about that too! However it was AFTER I named my son Sebastian! KId is going to have fun learning that one!

I found my son has taken longer to write his name, around 4 - my daughter has picked it up more quickly. I've heard this is true, but did find it to be true with my children. My daughter has much better fine motor skills than my son did at her age, from their drawings, you wouldn't know they are 3 years apart. My son also still struggles with scissors - he can do it, but it looks pretty uncomfortable for him. My daughter loves cutting with scissors. Anyway, relax, it will come along. All kids learn stuff at different rates, and I'm sure he is ahead of the curve on other things, so if he is average/typical at name-writing, I would say no worries! And I'm sure by the time my son is 15, he will be great at scissors!

In my experience with my kids and daycare...if they haven't learned it by 4yrs. old, they will almost always have it by 5 when they start kind. I have two 5yr old girls that can write their names, one four year old boy that writes it very well, and 1 boy/girl that can remember the letters but put them all over instead of left to right. They will have it down by the end of this school year no doubt.

MY son learned at 4. My daughter, who is almost 2, really does have better fine motor skills also than my son. It's weird. I spent more time with him and she does better at an earlier age!

my daughter could write lexi at 3-3 1/2....

but kids do things at different stages I wouldn't worry about comparing kids.If you feel your son is doing good and progressing at a good rate....good enough!!!

My daughter is 4 1/2 and is just now starting to have interest in writing her name. I found a website where you can print off practice sheets for individual letters, but also names. I loved it because they actually had her name "Jillian" on the list. She loves tracing her name. Free Printable Worksheets, Puzzle and Maze pages, and Activity Pages for kids

This site is great for printing tracing pages. YOu can print individual letters or names. I loved it because my daughter's name was included on the list and Jillian isn't one of the most common names.

My dd just has "artists' blood" in her from BOTH sides of the family, so she's been drawing and tracing letters ever since she could hold one correctly, at about age 2.

She's 5 now, and in pre-school, and it wasn't until just before she got to sign all her Valentine's Day Cards this year that she really got the CORRECT spelling of her name. (We practiced alot, because she's so independant and wanted to do them herself!!)
Occasionally, she'd switch around the "s" and "o" in her name...Madison, but now she spells it right 100% of the time. And this seemed to happen overnight.

So in my case, even though a child may seem to have "the artists' gene", still doesn't predict at what age they will be able to spell their name correctly.

I'm sure your son will come around in due time, and one day you may be having to wipe (or paint over, as I've had to do) his name off your walls, floors, etc... But...at least he'll be writing his name! Right?
