Wow, I had never really thought about it that way, but you are right.
Talking about the animated movies, I always viewed the movies as entertainment. If the kids enjoyed the movie, great, you can watch it again, if it scared them, we didn't watch it again.
We own every animated Disney movie from Snow White to Mulan....and we have watched them all at least once. There are some they liked more than others. When my ds was younger...Lion King was his favorite movie, and that was fine with me. when he "graduated" from a baby decorated room to a big boy room...it was all Lion King. My dd on the other hand, loved Aristicats and Oliver and Company and The Fox and the Hound. The Great Mouse Detective was another big favorite.
Now, there are some that I refused to let them watch...Eloise is one, but that is not animated.
I don't even mind Shrek. The way I see it, just because we "get it" doesn't mean that they do. But my kids are older......so I do think it does depend on age.
But I have always talked to them about the movies being "entertainment" and not real life at all.
Very interesting thread.
I remember when everyone was all up in arms over Lion King, Aladdin and The little mermaid having sex related scenes (or "frames").....that is a whole other discussion.....
