It isn't the death that bothers me, but the attitudes in some movies. Death is a part of life whether we like it or not. Now, if it is death on the level of the Holocaust, that might be too much for a 7 year old and younger, but Nemo, Lion King and such we have watched. None of those are their favorites though. Cars and The Little Mermaid they could watch over and over again although the boys don't admit to liking Little Mermaid.

I just don't care for Lilo & Stitch and a few others due to attitudes in it. The Incredibles was probably pushing the limit, but other parts were really good. Just got to pick and choose I guess.

I agree: It depends on the age and maturity of the children. BUT, that said, Disney DOESN'T present death as real life. It, thankfully, doesn't show blood and the true suffering, but it does show loss. The other thing is is shows people as pure good or evil. Life isn't like that. It portrays stepmothers as all evil. Doesn't that scare you? I'm not a stepmother, but I have one! It also shows that if you're beautiful, all is good in the end. If you're not beautiful, well, you're not so lucky.

Lilo and Stitch and some others? They just aren't nice to one another. The kids sass their elders and are mean to their siblings and others (Brandy and Mr. Whiskers is just bad w/that). And we wonder why this is happening in schools.

Wow, I had never really thought about it that way, but you are right.

Talking about the animated movies, I always viewed the movies as entertainment. If the kids enjoyed the movie, great, you can watch it again, if it scared them, we didn't watch it again.

We own every animated Disney movie from Snow White to Mulan....and we have watched them all at least once. There are some they liked more than others. When my ds was younger...Lion King was his favorite movie, and that was fine with me. when he "graduated" from a baby decorated room to a big boy room...it was all Lion King. My dd on the other hand, loved Aristicats and Oliver and Company and The Fox and the Hound. The Great Mouse Detective was another big favorite.

Now, there are some that I refused to let them watch...Eloise is one, but that is not animated.

I don't even mind Shrek. The way I see it, just because we "get it" doesn't mean that they do. But my kids are older......so I do think it does depend on age.

But I have always talked to them about the movies being "entertainment" and not real life at all.

Very interesting thread.

I remember when everyone was all up in arms over Lion King, Aladdin and The little mermaid having sex related scenes (or "frames").....that is a whole other discussion.....
