I am so happy my little one is starting to spell words She learned most of her basic phonics last year at preschool (most common sound vowels make and the sounds the other letters make as well).

I have been occassionally encouraging her to try when she asks how to spell a word by giving her each sound and letting her guess how to spell the word.

Today she brought me a piece a paper with these words

- Her Name
- Dog
- Cat
- Mom
- Dad
- Wot (white)
- CID (kid)
- off
-on
- and C with some random letters after it to spell Clifford

She is starting to read basic 3 letter words as well

I am so proud

Jen

how fun!!! my oldest dd had a word book when she started reading and spelling!!
she would write the word down that she could read and spell!! and it helped her learn more words! (her prek teacher suggested it!!)
I know I need to do this with my youngest one!!

Very cool!

Any suggestions for Word books?

My daughter also just started spelling. She surprised me by writing Dad and Mom last week. She has been writing her name for awhile.

the word books I would just get a Small 5X8 (I think) scrapbook *Cheap one*
and when they learned a new word they would write in the book!! dd and I decorated the top of the book and put Cass word book on it!! and I would even put the date she learned the new word!! it got her more interested since she saw her progress plus it was a Keepsake as well!!! This makes me think I need to do this with my younger dd!! she is 5!!!

and books to read those books that have 50 words (level books they have at Barnes adn knoble) also any books that have only 3or4 words per page!!
that is what worked best with my dd!!

Congratulations what a milestone! My dd is in kindergarten & I love seeing all of her writing that she does-it also makes me sad knowing how she is growing up fast.
