My ds is 5 wil be 6 in Sept. He refuses to wipe his own booty after he poops!! He always opens the bathroom door and calls for me, and when I say NO, do it yourself he sits there, on the pot till I do it!!! I left him there for 20 min. one time!!! He say's "I like you to do it Mama, because I love you!!" Whatever, little dude, whatever, lol!!

So, what is the magic thing that I can say or do to get him to do it himself??? He starts KG in the fall and will be there all day, at least 2 days a week, he might need to go #2 at school & I doubt the teacher is gonna come in and wipe his booty for him(nor should she have to, IMO)

I did a sticker chart for about 2 months to try to get him into some good habits, teethbrushing & getting dressed w/o being reminded, helping set table, etc. he did great on everything, but he refused to wipe his booty!!

Advice, PLEASE!!!

TIA

When I'm around my 5-yr old DD still has me do it. When she's in school or at a friend's house she manages on her own.

He'll figure it out.

My son's problem is that he was worried about hurting himself and getting stuff on his fingers. I taught him to use toilet paper to get the big stuff, but I bought the Kandoo wipes to help him really get clean. It took time and practice. I had him clean himself up first, then I would do a final swipe. Then, I changed to having him clean and I would just "inspect" until we both felt confident. Once he saw that I never had to do anything after a number of inspections, he was ready to be on his own. He has now weaned off the Kandoos, but, boy, I still like them for me! He will still use them if he's gotten especially messy, like when sick.

I am working on this same thing with my DS (4). What finally clicked with him is when I told him "you don't want to smell like poopy do you?" That seemed to be enough to make the connection for why we wipe. I have found with my son that sometimes a little explanation goes further than just saying this is what we do.

I am getting my almost 4 year old to do this now... i get wet wipes, and have her wash her hands really well after, which she is really good about doing anyway.

My ds has gotten to the point where unless its a reall mess he will do it himself (just turned 6). He refuses the wipes. I told him he will completly all on his own when he is in school all day so he needs to learn. I bet he will train his little booty to only go at home.

Do you get him the flushable wet wipes for kids? I know they can be expensive but many stores have a generic brand. These work wonders.

All i can say is just don't do it. When i was a nanny i started working with a family who had a five year old boy. For the first couple of days he would call to me to wipe his butt. Soooooooo i went in and did it. On about the fourth day of this i told him i wouldn't wipe his butt anymore. He said well my mommy and daddy do it.....i said "I'm not your mommy or your daddy." I then showed him one more time how to do it. The first and second day he called to me and i told him to do it himself.....by the third day of sitting on the toilet for so long he got the hang of it.

Funny thing is about seven years later i took him out to dinner and he said "I remember something you taught me when i was a kid Jodie"......I asked him what kind of knowing what he was going to say when he said he couldn't say it at the dinner table....haha.....after i told him it was ok he leaned in and said "You taught me how to wipe my own butt."....
