I am potty training my 2 year old and he's actually got the pee-pee on the potty thing down pretty well, only a few accidents. I let him run around the house with no diaper and he runs right into the bathroom to go pee-pee on the potty. However, he's pooped on the floor every time and I ask him about every 5 minutes when he has his diaper off if he has to go poo-poo and he always says no. Then he'll come to me and say "Mommy, poo-poo," meaning he went poo-poo on the floor. Luckily it's only been "messy" once. How did you all get your children to go poo-poo on the potty?

I think its one of those things he needs to do once on the potty and he'll get it, yanno? Just make sure you try to put him on there about 20 minutes after he eats and just keep asking him. Maybe get him some big boy undies to wear so theres something to catch it next time. lol

I was going to get him some Huggies training pants that turn cold when they're wet, which would help with pee but not poop. Do you think they're worth it or should I just get some big boy underware?

And, BTW, he pooped and peed on the floor again since my last post. I know there will be accidents so I remained calm and he looked sad. He came and told me and took me to put his diaper on and then showed me where he had done it. He's getting the jist I think, he just needs to learn to tell me before he does it. Good thing DH isn't home!

I'm having the same poop problem with my dd. She pees great in the potty; She only wears pullups to sleep in! But, she is hit or miss with the poop thing. Her Ped said to not use pullups to avoid the poop mess, that maybe she will not like pooping in her panties, but it doesn't seem to bother her. My only other thought is to get her some "character" panties and encourage her not to poop on the princess or Blue! That will have to wait till next payperiod.

Also, I found that with dd, the pullups were really only helpful for going out and during sleep. I think when I started only using training pants(the real kind from Gereber) that she really caught on fast.

It took me 6 months before my daughter would poop in the potty, she thought it would hurt or something, who knows what a 2 year old is thinking....But she trained in one day with pee, and never has an accident. Don't use pullups. Take him shopping and buy him character underwear, cars/thomas whatever it is and tell him that you don't want to poop on thomas he wont be happy. Worked for my dd, but it was cinderella panties. Worked for my son too but he pretty much potty trained himself.

I agree with the underwear. My son loves his Thomas undies. He also took forever to poop on the potty. Finally we started putting him on 20-30 minutes after lunch and supper. We made him sit for awhile. Couple stories or whatever. We just kept at it until it finally happened. Even after he pooped on the potty it took time. He was 3.5 yo when he finally was trained.

My son just turned 3 on July 4th and I'm really having a hard time getting him potty trained. He shows little to no interest in the potty. I've tried giving him "potty toys" that I bought from the dollar store that he could only use while sitting on the potty. He sat there for 20 minutes, but as soon as he got his pull-up back on, he went! My husband is frustrated and tired of buying pull-ups and wipes, as well as myself. Caleb, my son, is my only child for now, so I am an "unexperienced" mom when it comes to potty training. Should I just go to the underwear cold turkey? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I used pull ups but do nt believe that they really help with training. They are good for when you are out cause no mess but at home I say either cotton trainers, nothing or regular undies. My DD did not care about wetting herself in Her diaper or cotton trainers until ?i took her pants off. As soon as it ran down Her leg and made a puddle she freaked and that was that! Seh wanted to go on the potty. The hardest thing for me was the first few days She would not sit on the potty and would hold Her pee for hours, I mean four or five hours spent dancing cause She ahd to go but wouldn't. It was stressful cause She was crying and had to go. But She finally got it.
Pooping took a little longer but just keep with it. They all get it evetually. Good luck and stay calm!!!

Thanks Daisy! My sweet husband thinks that my son should already be potty trained by now. I tried to explain to him that just because someone else's child is potty trained by the age of 2, that doesn't mean every child will follow suit. I definitely agree that the pull ups are not working. He sees them as nothing more than a diaper. I will definitely try the underwear.

Also, did you guys get a little portable potty, or did you just use the toilet for them to train with?

Well potty training is soooo frustrating. When training my ds I did it all. I started with the Dr. Phill method. Then went to pull ups and taking him every 30 min., then undies. I ended up doing the bare naked thing which was what worked for him. I still used pull ups for bed and outings. Now just for bed. I swear I was training him for a year. Once I did the naked thing it was about three months. Lots os accidents but it worked best. After awhile I put him in undies with plastics over top then just undies. But as far as poopin. He would get quiet when he went and when I noticed this I would put him on the potty. It only took a few times. GOOD LUCK!!
