The other good thing about kids this age is they don't care if something is "new," as long as it's new to them.

Look for one of those Little Tikes workshops as people start cleaning out for Christmas. Anything little tikes will clean up with a Mr. Clean magic sponge-thing. Mine also love love love their easel - I keep it on the back porch, but bring it in for water colors (use a clearance plastic tablecloth that's washable) throughout the year. So fun. I am also a little people fan - mega blocks, anything that "runs" on imagination. My son loves rescue heroes - they are awesome and don't kill anyone - just rescue. My kids have played with this huge drum full of instruments from Target for years now. (they still sell them) Start watching the consignment stores/sales and don't be afraid to tell the clerk what you want - some places will call you if they get it in.

Don't waste your money on anything electronic - he's too little.

Little people, hot wheels cars and/or carrying case, lego's (bigger ones) or bath toys. My 2 yo loves to be in the tub so bath tub toys and bubbles are a hit here.

Wow, thanks for all the great ideas. I had never heard of Geotrax, and bummer I just got back from Walmart. I would have made a special trip to the toy section had I known, guess I will have to go back to see what geotrax is all about. I had the kids with me today and try to avoid the toy section.
