My son is 3 1/2 now and I am a stay at home mom. He has to attend the 4K program at the public school here, which would be next fall. I want him to be prepared. Do most Stay at Home Mom's sit down daily and work on numbers, writing, letters, etc?

I don't! Never have and all 6 of my kids have done just fine. Not sure how #7 will do, though, he is a challenge.

I don't work with my son much, but he's picked up a lot on his own. We have an electronic pooh book that he used to play with in the car. 1 hour a day when I watched my sisters kids and had to drive to her house daily! He pretty much taught himself the alphabet. I hung a chalkboard in his closet and that's where he taught himself to write letters! He just turned 4, but was doing all of this a year ago - and he taught himself most of it!

You would think that the answer is yes, but I've found that most don't! It's surprising to me how many just waste the day away watching tv!
I don't have time for tv, I've got three 4 and younger! (I just had to say that one last time b/c my 4 year old turns 5 next week )
We don't do much sit down/worksheet time (that is really boring) so maybe 30 mins a day of that, but we do alot of reading all day long, learn through play, writing on our board, art, music time, science, math manipulatives, projects, puppet shows, all the fun stuff!

I'm confused by 'he has to attend the 4K program at the public school here" statement. In my area, even kindergarten isn't mandatory. I can't imagine being required to send my little one to preschool.

As far as teaching my preschooler, I looked for a quiet-time activity in the afternoons. We would play memory games with cards we got at the dollar store. With those she also learned her colors and shapes. We did a little bit of counting and letter recognition (she made a letter of the day book) but that was all at that age of 3. We did do a lot of art. She knew how to color fairly well and use safety scissors. We also did lots of the milestone learning such as building with blocks, etc.

If your little one is required to go to pre-kindergarten, it sounds like the school is trying to make sure he is prepared. I wouldn't worry too much about what you're doing at home. When you see what he is doing in school, you can re-enforce that and support it at home.

I suggest a free website called Learn to Read at Starfall - teaching comprehension and phonics
This is a site dedicated to teaching children to read. I let my 3 and 4 year olds play around on it all the time. We are teaching them regularly b/c I want to homeschool and feel I need to develop better habits, but hey! I have 3 kids under 5 and am pregnant, so many days they play around on this starfall site. I think you will like it

sahmommyuv3~ thanks for that website!!!!

I don't have a set schedule with Wyatt for teaching. We don't do lessons every day or anything like that. However he does know his ABCs and he can count to 12 so far. He can write and spell his name too. I went on line and found some tracing websites and he loves to trace his letters and numbers.

I think every little bit helps but i do think your son will pick up alot in his 4-K so try not to worry.
