I know this has been discussed before, but my 2yr old dd won't poop in the potty. She doesn't hold it. I have figured out that she poops around 1:45 every pm, so I decided to keep her up from nap until she sits on the potty. We did this today and read a few stories. She said she didn't have to poop and started crying, so I let her get down. A few minutes later I hear the potty flush & I was waiting for the "Mommy I poopied" squeal, but she came and told me she dumped her poopie in the potty. She had pooped in her pants and then flushed it down the potty by herself. Now, it doesn't matter if she has special panties on, she just tells me that her princesses are sad. I don;t know what else to do. Should I just give it a rest? She "earns" a book every time she poops on the potty and she gets very excited, but she hasn't done that in a few weeks!!! HELP!!!

Oh, she pees just fine. Only wears pullups for sleeping just in case!

I wish I had some helpful tips - but I'm in the same boat. My almost 3 year old son has been in underwear during the day since the beginning of March (when he was 2 1/2). In that time, he has pooped in the potty maybe 4 times. He's really good about not pooping in his underwear though (he's only done that 4 or 5 times too). His issue is that he is more comfortable pooping standing up so he insists on pooping in a diaper (he will ask for one when he needs it). His pediatrician said not to push it because then I risk him holding it in and creating a whole new problem, but I have been telling him that when his diapers run out I'm not buying him anymore (he's still in Pull-Ups at night, so if I get desperate - I can let him use those).

We've tried bribing him with Kan-Doo wipes, Star Wars fruit snacks, toys, heck, I've even offered to take him to Target and buy him a toy if he'll poop on the potty. Nothing works consistently (he has been known to go a little bit to get something he wants though - so I know he knows how to do it). He'll talk about how he's going to poop in the potty next time but he always backs out (he says "I'm going to poop in the potty tomorrow" - but somehow tomorrow never comes!!)

It does sound like your daughter is more comfortable pooping standing up though. I've been told that you use different muscles when you stand than you do when you sit so it may be that it's just a new feeling that she needs to get used to.

If you figure out a solution to your problem, please let me in on the secret!

At least I know I'm not the only one out there!!! I never thought about the standing thing. I'll have to ask the Dr when ds goes for his well baby next week!

I wouldn't worry. My son did not start pooping on the potty until he was 3 years 11 months. I was so frusterated, I had posted on here and tried everything everyone suggested and nothing worked. Finally I just decided, I had to stop stressing and one day he did and it hasn't been a problem since.

We had this problem with our 3 yo dd when trying to train her. She would pee fine, but the poop thing was out of the question. We finally told her that when she pooped in the potty we would buy her any toy she wanted as a reward. We agged it on a little by going through the toy section every time we went to the store and when she would ask for a toy we would remind her she could have any toy she wanted after she pooped in the potty. Finally about 3 weeks later she decided to cash in on our offer. (She chose a little people castle set-$22) Since then she has always gone poop in the potty. She does have days though now that she will come tell us she pooped and can she please have another toy. Our no's haven't caused her to revert back. Yet!!! Instead now she has decided she doesn't want her beautiful master piece to be flushed and will throw a tissy if we do flush it.

Aren't kids great?

I got the scoop on the poop issue today.

The Ped said that it is psychological. Even though she dumps her own poop in the potty and flushes it, she still has a psych thing with actually pooping in the potty. She said that their reasoning is different than ours and even though to us it makes sense that if they will flush the poop with no problem, that they shouldn't have a problem sittining on the potty, in their minds that is totaly diffrerent. She said to stick with the positive reinforcement when she does poop on the potty and, with time, it will come.

Right there with ya. Mine is 3 /12 and pees just fine, but will only poop in his underware or a diaper, usually a diaper. He will hold it if he has he undies on and ya know the problems there. Let me in on the secret if anyone has one.....

I had the same problem with my son. If he had underwear on, he would just poop in them. Now, I am a mom who doesn't like to stay home and we go out quite a bit. I bit the bullet so to speak and decided to stay home for a whole week. While home, I had him run around nude. He would beg for underwear or a diaper so he could poop and I wouldn't give it to him. I would calmly explain that he had to go on the potty and I would hold his hand. After about 3-4 times doing it on the potty, I put the undies back on. We had only one accident since then, that was over a month ago.
