Hi, I am new to the group but I was wondering, we have a 4 1/2 year old daughter who has just now started putting things up her nose. They called me from preschool earlier and said she had put a bead up her nose but they got it out and she was fine. She did this for the first time about a month ago, stuck a small piece of a sponge up her nose and told me right then what she did and I got it out. It scared her so bad that I thought that would be the end of that but I guess not. She has never been one to really do a lot of things like this. Any suggestions on how to get her to understand not to do this? Is it normal for them to just start doing this at this age, I always thought it was at a younger age.

Thanks, Susan

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions but it made me crack up because I used to put things up my nose when I was little... most memorably Puffed Rice cereal! I don't know what my mom did to get me to stop, though.

I think you should call your ped to see what he suggests. My son did this with a dissolvable chewable cold tablet, but it was broken up and dissolved quickly. Then he did it with a bean. BUT he was much younger. I would think at this age she'd know better! Kids are just so full of surprises.

When my DD was 4 she put a bead up her nose and it got stuck. I had to take her to the ER. They tried a couple of things which didn't work. The doctor told me to leave the room while they tied her to a backboard and had to extract the bead with foreceps. Half the hospital could hear her screaming.

She didn't do it again.

Perhaps this has become a fascinating process because you've been successful at extracting the object. What is the danger with a foreign object up the nose? Well, it can cause infections and it can end up going all the way the other direction and cause choking. Since the last incident scared your DD, perhaps scaring her with further dire warnings won't work either. Instead tell her if she puts anything up her nose again, you'll have to punish her so she'll remember not to do it again. Take away TV time or a favorite toy or privilege - one day for every year of her age - to help her remember.

I am so laughing with you. My oldest dd did that too when she was that age. I had no clue that she had been doing a while , by the time she told me she put popcorn up her nose that I couldn't get out I took her to the ER. They tied her down, removed the popcorn with tweezers i swear (at the time) were 8 inches long. Besides the popcorn they found about 4 pieces of foam that she took outta her stuffed bear. I was horrified, but the experience scared her not to do it again.
Maybe if you share stories of other little ones and the horrible experiences that they had,. she might refrain form doing it again.

My 4 1/2 yr old had a thing about putting things in his ears last year!! One time they found two sprinkles (like off a cake) in there when I took him in for a regular check up. He alo had pieces of plastic and a few other things in there!! I asked the dr about it and he said he really did not know how to get him to stop, but his mom told him that he did that when he was little too!!!! (maybe my son will grow up to be a doctor!) He seems to have out grown it (I hope!)

Thank you all, I had to laugh with the stories. The things our kids do.... I will be having a serious talk with her when she gets home. She had her tonsils/adenoids out in July and did not like that and ever since then she has gone to the doctor once and the dentist and had a fit (brought back memories of the pain from surgery) so I plan to sort of use that but not scare her about surgeries and use it as an example of what could happen.

KIDS ... are kids and they just stick things in places... it happens... My dd has done it but we have always been able to get the items out. If you can't get something out of their nose... plug the empty side with your finger(just press the side like pincing) leave the side wiht the object in it and blow in their mouth like cpr it will fly out if it not really logged up tehre.
