My 3 yr old dd found a caterpiller last night. She wanted to take him to school today.. I said ok, but then we are going to let him go... She agreed.. We scooped him up into an old peanut butter jar and off to school she went..

I got back to preschool to pick her up and she said 'mommy he isn't moving" ok mom what do you do..... 'honey he's probably tired, preschool wore him out' she wasn't to happy with my anwser.. She insisted on taking him home until he woke up, then she would let him go.. In my mind I'm thinking this poor thing will srivel up and rot and she will still be waiting..

Her teacher said the children loved him, maybe to much....

So we brought him home and left him on the counter ALL DAY. She checked on him a hundred times....

All day I'm thinking.. now what.. do I get rid on him, tell her she has to let him go? What.. Well I forgot about him, she forgot about him.. She's in bed, dh comes home and says aren't you going to let this thing go.. he's itching to get out of here.. I'm still thinking Yeah right..

Really he is moving.... But now what.. let him go or hope he survives the night so she can let him go..

Dh decided for us... The catapiller is out side, on his own in this great big world.. The jar is put up. Maybe she will forget, and if she doesn't maybe she won't be heartbroken..

Aww that's so cute! I'm sure she'll find another itty bitty best friend in no time. Reminds me of the little girl I nannied years ago. She used to make everything her pet - frogs, worms, birds, spiders. She'd name them too and call them by name whenever she saw them (as if the first worm she saw and named was the same worm she saw 10 days later). Silly but adorable. Finally her parents got her a hermit crab - she LOVED that thing. If she asks, just tell her that it needed to go back home to its Mommy and Daddy to tell them how preschool was. I'm sure she'll be alright

This EXACT thing just happened to us tonight! We made ds, almost 6, take him back outside. He was alive but not very happy. He is older though, so I just said that he had to think of the caterpillar and where he would be happiest. Ds is a real nature freak so he understood. Your dd is a bit young to understand yet!
