Ladies, need some feedback here - my 4 year old come home from preschool today announcing that she wanted to paint her nails. She requested either black or brown. LOL. But to be honest, I think she's way too young to get into any type of glamour. I know some of you will think - heck, what's the big deal, it's only nail polish. But really, I would like to raise her to believe she's beautiful just the way she is..... that she doesn't need make-up, nail polish, etc.. She went on to say so & so wears nail polish in school. I pulled the old addage "well, you don't have to do it just because she does." It pacified her for now but I know this is just the beginning. Do you any you have good advice as to pair down these requests and how to respond to her? I would really like to put this off as long as I can - especially becuase "I'm the mommy and I say so." :-)

Thank you!

I don't paint my 3 1/2 year old daughter's nails either. I don't necessarily see anything wrong with it, I just think she will have plenty of time to do that when she gets older. She doesn't need to get glamorous yet. I know that whenever my dd talks about having earrings I just tell her that she is so pretty just the way she is so she doesn't need them. That seems to work so far.

I don't even paint my nails! But my mother and once my niece did do my then 3 year olds nails and that was fine. It really wasn't my thing but my daughter loved it and like I said it wasn't an all the time thing.

Though I will say that my SIL (husband's insane sister) was telling me about the mother's that she knows that go get their nails "done" with their daughters!

I've seen moms with their 6-7 year old DD come for getting their nails done.

I would wait ateast till she was 13.

I love to do those girly things wiht my girls and its a way to let htem learn to me to do something for themselves once in a while!! I am trying to let my girls learn its ok to pamper themself oncein a while as I am rally bad about it myself!!

sorry I have no ideas how to hold off other than just sway her into other things!!

Whatever you do, don't cave in and buy her that "play makeup" they make for young kids. My inlaws bought that crap for my dd for Christmas and it stains everything, especially the nail polish.

Are you being serious? You honestly think a girl who goes out for a special pedicure or something with her mother will lose all sense of values? It may not be right for your family but I think it's a pretty big stretch to assume they will not grow up to be productive members of society.
